Owner description: The former home of artist and writer John Ruskin is perched high above Coniston Water. Brantwood offers a fascinating insight into the world of John Ruskin and the last 28 years of his life spent at Coniston. Filled with many fine paintings, beautiful furniture and Ruskin’s personal treasures, the house retains the character of its famous resident. Famous as a writer, artist and social reformer, many great thinkers have been influenced by Ruskin’s ideas. Brantwood remains a place of inspiration. Displays and activities in the house, gardens and estate reflect the wealth of cultural associations with Ruskin’s legacy – from the Pre Raphaelites and the Arts and Crafts Movement to the founding of the National Trust and the Welfare State. With its many contemporary exhibitions, concerts, courses and special events, together with its education work in the wider community, Brantwood continues in the Ruskin tradition today.

We regularly visit Brantwood. The gardens are a delight. Frequent exhibitions are shown here and the Jumping Jenny café next door with spectacular views across Lake Coniston are hard to beat. It is worth being a 'Friend of Ruskin' to enjoy free entry and 10% discount on books and at the Jumping Jenny.

We look forward to our next visit.

This review is in 2 parts. Firstly the visit to the house. A fantastic experience and well worth the 7 pounds entrance fee. We had a great look arount the house viewing original art by John Ruskin and a pleasant walk around the gardens. We then had lunch in the restaurant which was absolutely fantastic! We were served by pleasant staff and treated to the best food we have had in the area so far. The homemade Carrot and Corriander soup served with hot crusty brown bread and fresh butter was excellent. Finished off with Tart Citron and freshly whipped cream! Well done. We will be back for some more.

Brantwood is the home of John Ruskin, the renowned artist, writer and teacher. It is a beautiful setting, with gardens to walk in, and the home itself is lovely. It has most of the origina, furnishings from Ruskin's time, including his collections of little shells, rocks and pieces of interest that inspired him.
The drive to Brantwood along the east side of Coniston is by itself a beautiful outing, but seeing the home is a treat. It's not necessary for a lovely outing, but you will get more out of your visit if you read a bit about Ruskin before you go, even if it is just the wikipedia entry at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Ruskin or go to the Ashmolean Museum website and seach on Ruskin's collection of art work he used in his teaching at Oxford. Or read about him on the brantwood.org.uk site, where you'll also find all the details about opening times, guided garden tours, etc. as well.
The "Jumping Jenny" Cafe at Brantwood was of very good quality, and in warm weather, eating out on the terrace overlooking Coniston would be a treat. Clean bathrooms, nice little gift shop too.

Best £10 (for two) we've ever spent! Saw a huge own on our walk and that was worth every penny! Very steep gardens but gorgeous views when you get to the top of the Estate.

Whilst we have visited the Lake District a few times we hadn't happened upon Brantwood, as it is tucked away on the "quiet" side of Coniston Water. However having seen the reviews on Trip Advisor we decided to pay it a visit and were very glad we did. The house is full of interesting things and we learned a lot more about John Ruskin. The small cafe is very welcoming and we enjoyed a very pleasant coffee in what is a converted stable.

Set beautifully alongside Coniston Water, with superb views even on a dull March day, it was well worth the visit.
