“comfy, warm stay”
Reviewed December 11, 2013

My wife and I stayed here for one night last weekend on a last minute booking and really enjoyed our stay. We were met with a smile on our arrival and were put in room 5, which was a bit on the small side, but suited us fine. It was clean, comfy and warm. TV was ok, as was en-suite bathroom.
After a bit of a rest we went down to have evening meal in the bar and enjoy some of the real ales on offer. Food was good, honest pub food, served with a smile, and well priced. Beer was good as well.
After a good nights sleep we ate breakfast in the conservatory, again, very good, set us up for our mountain walk in the fog and rain, the manager kindly let us leave our car on the car park for the day, with no charge. On our return we popped in the bar to dry a bit in front of the log fire and have a coffee before our drive home.
Not sure about the negative posts on here, perhaps we were just lucky, but we found the Sun to be just what we wanted, good value pub accomodation and food.

I speak for myself and wife only. I do not speak for my climbing club organisation.
Food average.
Service less than average.
Gents toilet disgusting.
Barman not interested, what a shame as collectively we must have spent hundreds and hundreds on drink.
The location is stunning and this when compared to my experience only compounds my disappointment. Perhaps the organisation and its management are complacent due to the location - conjecture on my part however. Contrary to their sign The Sun Hotel and Pub are NOT the finest in the area- could be though.

To see the lakes is a wonderful experience by itself but the staff at the Sun Hotel made it that little extra special. Days of wandering (not quite as lonely as the cloud) through wonderful countryside followed by a pint or two of proper beer in a proper pub (the hotel bar) with proper locals to chat to will not be easily topped. A note to anyone not used to British beer: the beer was brewed locally, kept at the correct temperature and served with pride. The comfy bed at the end of the evening gave us the rest we needed to polish off a genial breakfast ready for the next tramp during which we fantasised about dinner. My only regret is that I didn’t get chance to say “thank you” to the chef for some marvellously memorable meals.

A group of around twenty of us spent a fantastic evening at the Sun recently while camping at a soggy Coniston Hall. We held our canoe club EGM upstairs before enjoying some great food and warm hospitality (the staff even offered to take our wet jackets to dry them). The beer was also good with a decent choice and some excellent brews (Loweswater Gold is a particular favourite and has been mentioned by another reviewer). All in all The Sun provided a warm, dry sanctuary on a miserable autumn evening. Thanks from the Open Canoe Sailing Group.

On a recent visit to Coniston we booked two rooms (4 & 5) for a brief one night stay. We arrived a little early and was greeted by Alan who made us feel very welcome and enquired if our rooms were ready. Room five was ready so we unloaded our cases and went for a look around coniston. When we returned, room four was now ready for our occupation so we went straight up stairs. The rooms could possibly do with a little updating but the beds and bedding were very comfortable, the views amazing and you had everything necessary for a very comfortable stay. The bar area is extremely characterful with a good range of beers, wine and spirits. I can't comment on the bar menu as we ate elsewhere. Breakfast was very good indeed and very well cooked and presented. All in all a very comfotable and relaxing hotel that I will certainly be returning to.

Room Tip: If you like a large bath then room four maybe for you.

Outstanding food (try the Cumberland hot-pot) and beautiful beer (the Lowes Water Gold is terrific), not to mention the warm bed and fabulous breakfast. Staff are also very friendly and knowledgeable about the local area and history. Can't wait to go back again for another hike in the areas. I will be back no doubt.

A party of 10 of us, having pre booked a table arrived on Friday evening. we were seated in a souless, cold, badly lit conservatory without menus. After they were eventually produced we ordered at the bar. The man serving was disorganised and slow. They were obviously insufficient staff and were unable to deal with a large order even though we had pre booked. We sat and waited and waited and waited in the arctic conservatory which warmed up when they switched a radiator on. The food was produced and if it had been priced more sensibly would have passed muster. £14 for an adequate fish pie. No puddings for us. A very pleasant female member of staff apologised. All too often the Lake District produces poor, over priced food, knowing they are serving to passing tourist trade, knowing they wont be back. (there are exceptions that produce fabulous food). The Sun is a disgrace. It is a prominent building in a lovely village. What a wasted opportunity. None of us will be back.
