“A fine Lakeland fell!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 5, 2013

There is a lovely that takes you along the shore of Coniston Water & then up through a wood & then uphill to 'The Old Man'. We passed a frozen waterfall at a quarry, which was stunning.
On a snowy Sunday in March, the hill was a god challenge.

“Just a Saturday walk”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 30, 2013

It's a great walk which we've done many times. I would say it's a good route for anyone who's reasonably fit and would like a pleasant walk on not too difficult terrain.

“A Family Friendly Mountain and a Great Intoduction to Fellwalking”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2013

Rising to 803m or 2635 feet The Old Man of Coniston or "The Old Man" as it's called locally, is one of the most popular fell walks in the Lakes and for good reason. The mountain's position on the southern edge of the high fells of the Lake District afford superlative views over both the lowlands of Furness and the cluster of high fells around Eskdale and Langdale as well as a bird's eye view of Coniston Water. At least when it isn't raining anyway.

I first climbed the peak as a youngster and it is - for many their first experience of fellwalking thanks to easy access from Coniston. The wide rough track via Low Water is the most popular way and shows something of the region's mining past; the route by Goats Water below the sublime cliffs of Dow Crag and Goats Hause is perhaps the most spectacular while the lesser used path by Boo Tarn and the South ridge is in my own personal favourite.

Easy it is by any of these routes but don't forget that it is over 2500 feet high and this is the Lakes - be prepared (as a scout might say) for any weather conditions and wear shoes suitable for rough stony paths (it's about three to four hours return from Coniston) and you will find a family friendly mountain and a great introduction to fellwalking.

“Good walk”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2013

It took us about 3hours from Coniston village and back. It is not too difficult. There were lovely views over Lake Coniston and some interesting mine workings on the way up.
