“If looking for a house for large family this would be excellent choice”
Reviewed March 8, 2013 for a stay in March 2013

Great location for large group or family. Facilities inside and out just what we needed for group of 24 inc 4 small children. Clean and comfortable bedrooms. We wondered if the kitchen would have sufficient pots, utensils serving dishes, plates, etc for cooking proper meals. We were not disappointed. Plenty of space with three sitting areas for smaller groups wanting to watch TV, chat or play games. Pool table a must for the men. Local ale delivered and set up by brewery in summer house was excellent (I am told). Dining room was great for whole group to enjoy meals together. Some of the group went cycling, plenty of circular routes to choose from. Not far to Maryport, Keswick, etc so whole Lake District within easy reach. Plenty of tourist attractions to visit. One thing worth mentioning, IF YOU DONT HAVE SATNAV make sure you print off a detailed map of how to get to Big White House. Definitely not easy to find using standard road atlas. Satnav now on Christmas wish list. Would definitely recommend Big White House.

“Special birthdays (60ths) celebrated in a lovely setting”
Reviewed February 25, 2013 for a stay in February 2013

We travelled to Cockermoth for a family celebration (2 family members were 60 over the last couple of months). The majority of the party stayed for a week but my husband and I just stayed for the weekend. It was lovely. The house is very spacious with a very large kitchen (2 sinks etc, dishwashes etc) and it has 11 bedrooms altogether. There were 18 adults and 3 children in our party (one a baby) and a dog, and we had a lovely time. The house has 3 lounges in it and a games room with a pool table in so there was plenty of room for us to spread out and get away from everyone if we wanted. The dining room is enormous with a wonderfully long table in it where we all sat at mealtimes and had a really good laugh.

Altogether a good time was had by all!

ps The beds are really comfortable!!!

“GOOD ACCOMODATION AND FACILITIES”
Reviewed February 14, 2013 for a stay in February 2013

We as a group of 20 people have been having a reunion weekend dating back to the late 70's. Having spent the last 12 years in Derbyshire we decided on a change and found the Big White House.
The entire house is well presented with good clean decor. The bedrooms are quite modern and the ensuite wc's and basins make the three bathrooms more than adequote.
We found the kitchen to be well equiped. The small area in the large dining area with wine cooler and stacks of glasses was particularly useful.
We used the pool room extensively and the cinema room was a great retreat for the tele with wine brigade.
To undertake a decent hill walk was not an option from the house, cars were needed but the village pub with food was only a 10-15 minute stroll.

“excellent place to stay for large groups.”
Reviewed January 23, 2013 for a stay in January 2013

All thirteen of our group had a great long weekend in the big white house. Didn't have any problems but if we did we had a point of contact. Plenty to do in the house which included a pool room and cinema room. We will probably return in the future.

“Good value large & quirky holiday house on north edge of Lake District”
Reviewed January 10, 2013 for a stay in January 2013

We stayed in the Big White House for a New Year gathering with friends. There 17 of us in total (10 adults & 7 'children' aged 18 to 13). The property owners (Stay Lakeland) were helpful and welcoming, returning our deposit in good time with no unexpected charges. The Big White House is in an isolated rural location 5 miles north of Cockermouth. Although not in the centre of the most popular Lake District areas it's only a short drive to some well known attractions, such as Buttermere. There's also good walking from the property itself - with views to the sea and Scotland on a clear day. The Big White House suited us perfectly - more than enough bedrooms (we didn't even use a couple of them) - a spacious feeling and good basic rather than ornate fittings. The kids camped out in the two sitting rooms upstairs whilst the adults used the snug next to the enormous dining room that could seat 20+. The kitchen was adequately sized but got a bit crowded with more than 2 people in it. There were lots of large post and pans and a couple of ovens, a hob and a microwave. We filled the large fridge in the kitchen quickly but then found a reserve fridge in the drying room on the other side of the house. The drying room was big and great to house all our boots & coats at the end of each day. The carpets, bedding and furnishings are of a reasonable standard - it's probably a property that suits 'down to earth' people rather someone looking for a refined experience. Most of the rooms have an ensuite toilet & hand basin (not ensuite showers). There are 3 separate shower rooms - which we found adequate for 17 people. Plenty of parking space. Couple of nearby pubs within walking distance (1 mile & 2 miles). The nearest town Cockermouth has an appealing centre with coffee shops galore and the local brewery runs an interesting tour with tasting. Overall we felt the property was well managed and good value for money.

“Very, very cold”
Reviewed December 26, 2012 for a stay in November 2012

Our extended family planned to mmet at The Big White House to celebrate various birthdays and an early Christmas. A member of the family lives nearby and heard about it locally - it should have fitted the bill perfectly. The week prior to our weekend was the coldest of the winter so far - with minus temperatures overnight and frozen ground. My sister was the first to arrive from Scotland; she got there at about 17.00 and found the house was ice cold - the heating wasn't on. She immediately called the maintenance number; the heating was checked remotely and found to be off. It was switched on immediately, and subsequent calls between maintenance and my sister confiirmed it was on but that some radiators were not getting hot. She offered to bleed them but was advised that it was a sealed system and would need topping up. It was left that we would get in touch with maintenance if necessary in the morning.
Other members of the family arrived throughout the evening; my niece and her daughter (aged 3) came at 20.00 - their bedroom temperature showed 8 degrees on the baby monitor.
Everyone from ages 3 - 77 had to spend the first night under layers of clothes and duvets - a horrible way to start the weekend. Maintenance texted on Saturday to ask whether they should come over, but we refused - we had things planned and wanted to get on with them. By Saturday afternoon the house was geting warm - and we could have a proper family celebration with Philo's excellent catering (on the website).
Whilst most of the rooms got warm, the toilets in every room had no heating at all, so were like ice boxes all weekend. The house really lacked a sitting room large enough for more than 8 people, and the dishwashers need some serious attention as neither washed properly. The tourism rating is too hgh for what it is; particularly as the weekend before I stayed in a beautiful, well-equipped and luxurious house in Scotland with the same rating.
I followed up with Stay Lakeland who we booked it through and despite several emails feel I haven't received a satisfactory explanation as to why the house wasn't checked prior to our arrival; their office is about 5 miles away and at a presumably quieter time of year surely someone could have come by on Friday morning to check the heating was on and working - especially given the temperature outside. I also haven't received an apology for losing one day of our weekend - a fact that has still not been acknowledged.

“Happy Family Times at the Big White House”
Reviewed November 20, 2012 for a stay in November 2012

Just reutrned from a family get together at the Big White House near Cockermouth and we had a great time

The accommodation was more than enough for the 21 guests ranging in age from 10 to late 50s - a mix of children, teenagers, young adults and parents to celebrate a big birthday

The bedrooms are comfortable and well furnished, the kitchen is well stocked with utensils and appliances to cook and feed the group.

The dining room table is a big hit but there isn't enough space in the two lounges for the whole group to sit comfortably together but that didn't really bother us as we went off to view different TV programmes and do different activities - the pool table was a hit even though it was missing a black ball - stuck in the table we think

We had a great time and would certainly return for the next family celebration

Can recommend a bracing walk on the beach just down the road from the house
