“Very Pleasant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 21, 2011

I've stayed at the Old Posting House three times now when I've been working in Cockermouth. It's a very pleasant place to stay with spacious modern rooms at a reasonable price. The food in the restaurant is excellent and one of the reasons I keep coming back. Both Mick and Graham (who helps out from time to time) make great hosts. Thoroughly recomnmended.

We chose this inn with friends from reviews online and we were not disappointed. Mick the host had rung us in Australia to confirm our booking and planned arrival time and we knew from the start that we would be well looked after.

Our rooms were clean and comfortable and the en-suite bathrooms recently renovated and well appointed. Evening meal was excellent, the inn was obviously a popular spot for the locals and breakfast next morning plentiful and cooked to order. Mick was a geat host and only too happy to share his own travelling experiences, and explain the story behind the hundreds of Tea Pots that adorn the public rooms - quirky and added some character to the historic aspects of the inn.

The location was quiet with an outlook across farmland to the village from our room. There is ample off street guest parking and the inn is well situated for easy access to the most popular drives through the Northern Lakes district, or several walking tracks through farmland and the nearby villages to Loweswater and the fels beyond.

Highly recommended.

I didn't stay here. I called one sunny lunchtime for a beer and a bag of crisps after a hot walk in the lakes. As the pint was being pulled I asked if they sold crisps. The haughty retort was "I'm sorry sir, this is a restaurant, we don't do crisps. I can give you a bowl of chips, or a steak..."
I settled for the pint (short measure, there was a collar larger than a vicar's) and wandered through the bar which looked like any other bar serving bar meals. I looked outside - not a sign anywhere indicating this was a restaurant.
OK, no big deal, the place probably does very nice meals but the manner of the bloke behind the bar soured my visit. I pass the inn regularly and from now one will continue to pass and seek the friendliness found in most other Cumbrian pubs.
It gave me great pleasure not returning my glass to the bar. I left it outside.
One more thing. If the Old Posting House is a restaurant, how come its website tells me it's an inn??

This was a great surprise, we arrived at lunch time greeted by the owner and shown to
our room- well they have been renovated recently and our room was delightful looked out onto the back of the inn and car park garden with a bubbling brook (well very small wee burn) ensuite nice and roomy -Big cosy towels. Great Breakfasts anything you want and then the Dinners, typical Pub meals beautifully cooked , service excellent. If you have a small appetite tell them before you order. Mike is a great host and when you see how many people arrive for dinner you know you will be well looked after. Added to this it is historical as this was where in the days of horses and carriages the mail was dropped off here sorted and awaited collection both coming in and going out. Also look up and check out the teapots. Hope to get back

me and my partner stayed here for 3 nights, and enjoyed the peace, and tranquility of the location. you get a good nights sleep, and wake to the gentle baying of the sheep, and nothing else. love the host mick, and his friend graham who helps out. the food was sensational, and very reasonably priced. the pub is full of character, and has loads of various ornamental teapots hanging up, a lot given as thank yous for their stay. this pub is an absolute must for anyone who wants some real quality, and the staff are very attentive to your needs. reccommended!!
