“Enjoyable Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 26, 2013

The entire evening spent in the restaurant was very enjoyable, great food, great company with very efficient ,helpful staff. Nothing was too much effort for any of the staff in the restaurant. The menu was fully inclusive of all tastes and covered all of our requirements. Will be returning to this establishment on my next visit to Ambleside. I will try an leave room for a desert next time !!

Dear David H. - what a lovely review ... thank you and delighted that you enjoyed both the ambience and the service at Lucy's ... I think that the team work extremely hard to ensure a relaxing and enjoyable time is had by all ... including the staff (what's the point of working if it's not fun as well) ... although it's hard work it's extremely rewarding when we are blessed with guests such as yourselves - so thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to review us in such a positive way. Have a very Happy Christmas and we shall look forward to welcoming you back to Lucy's on a plate on your next visit to this beautiful part of the world. xx

“'Cakealicious'”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2013

'Cakealicious' was the word used by my grandson to describe his hot chocolate and piece of cake when we visited. Others in the party had coffees, tea and milkshakes with scones and cakes. Everyone was very pleased with the quality of the pastries. Staff were friendly and efficient.

“so bad we gave up and left”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 24, 2013

When all you order is a coffee, a milkshake and 2 pieces of cake you wouldn't expect it to be this bad.

at first glance the slice of cake I'd ordered was massive, enough to feed four, this is the only good point. The lemon drizzle cake was served upside down which itself is strange but not quite as strange as all the mould which was hidden on the other side.

The obvious question, do they know which way up to serve Drizzle cake, or did they intentionally try to hide the mould.

We returned the cakes and said we would not have any food but would still have the drinks.

15 minutes later and still no drinks, we decided to leave. No offer of apology from the chef or any of the staff.

Waters1world, I am sorry that you see fit to post a review on trip advisor that is not just bad, it is in fact incorrect. However, as with everything there are always three sides to the story - yours, ours and the truth ... hopefully future guests will read between the proverbial lines and take whichever side they feel meets their needs. The piece of cake that was 'massive' wasn't overly large, but compared to other establishments outside the Cake District you may find our servings here in the Lakes as generous as the hospitality - after all, Lucy's intends to ensure that we serve 'cakes to Keep Cumbria Curvy' ... anyway, that said, you also said that Lemon AND blueberry cake was served upside down ... this was not in fact true ... the lemon and blueberry (if you cooked it) you would know that the blueberries 'sink' to the bottom of the mixture and nestle there, and once cooked make it quite a vibrant 'blue' together with the moistness of the actual lemon drizzle (serving it warm is because lemon - like chocolate - is enhanced by being served warm ... that's our way)- your comment about the mould was actually the 'blue' of the blueberries and when the chef inspected it following your comment knew straight away what it was - he did come down to apologise to you and to point out the problem ... but you refused to listen and walked out 'cursing and abusing our establishment'. As for the drinks taking a long time - I am uncertain why your drinks didn't come prior to the cakes being put on the table - other than it being a new member of staff who served you and inadvertently put the cakes down first - you ordered a Milkshake - which although isn't a difficult drink to make, we do it with fresh ingredients rather than a premix and I think the aforementioned new girl was a little slow given her inexperience so apologies for that, she is much more up to speed now - there was also the additional stress of trying to sort out the cake situation. Anyway, although you live locally I know you have little 'love' for Lucy's and so probably don't expect to see you back here in the future - I am however, sorry that on that particular Sunday we didn't meet your expectations.

“Lovely Lunch”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 24, 2013

After emailing Lucy to book a table and inform her of my girlfriends dietary requirements (dairy intolerant).
We arrived on a cold Saturday afternoon to be warmly greeted and shown to our table next to the cosy fire. Lucy then clearly explained what on the menu was suitable for my girlfriend and what other dishes could be adapted. She recommended the handmade flat bread with dips to share and took our drink order.
Shortly afterwards our drinks arrived - fantastic mulled wine and food order was taken.
In what seemed like no time a tall our starter arrived a large plate of freshly baked flatbreads with hummus (thoughtfully changed from yoghurt) and a tomato and onion dip, which was perfect to set up for our main courses.
I had chosen the breakfast which consisted of Bury black pudding stacked with a curl of Cumberland sausage, crispy bacon and a poached egg on top. Which was delicious. My girlfriend had the Bobotie, a South African dish consisting of spiced minced meat baked with an egg-based topping. Which she declared as one of the best things she had ever tasted.
So full after that we had no room for desert, for which their was a fantastic choice on the 'slate' and cakes on display.
All the staff were very friendly and attentive it is just unfortunate that we never got to say thank you personally to Lucy. A perfect relaxed lunch and we cant wait to return on our next trip to Ambleside.

Dear Mike - thank you so much for your lovely review and it was a pleasure to meet you both and to be able to accommodate your lovely lady's dietary needs. Whilst we've always been committed to our guests who suffer intolerances with wheat and gluten ... dairy sometimes sits on the sidelines, so it's good occasionally to refocus on the do's and don'ts! I very much hope that you will be joining us again before too long ... and hopefully you'll be able to fit in a dessert ... you could always come for 'just desserts' ... and I am sure that there will be something to fit the bill for you both. Have a very Happy Christmas and once again thank you for taking the time and trouble to let everyone know of your experience at Lucy's on a plate. xx

“A good choice of food for a dining family”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2013

We had a delicious meal here one evening while on holiday near Ambleside. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere and the staff were very friendly. There was a good choice on the children's menu but my only criticism is that no vegetables were served as part of the meal - they ordered sausage and mash and that is exactly what they had. My husband and I however could not fault our meal - probably the best fish and chips I've had in a long time. Not badly priced either, it was a shame we didn't have time to stay for dessert as the menu looked amazing.

Dear Rebekah - your review is much appreciated, thank you and I'm delighted that you were able to eat en famille. You must come for Desserts next time (you can come for Just Dessert you know!) ... in response to your query about vegetables for the children - our Little Lucy's menu does state that we'll serve our young guests just what they want and the dishes are as described - for example 'Sausage and Mash' 'Tiddly Tagine' 'Little Lasagane' ' Mac Cheese' and so on - however if you'd like vegetables, salad or other greenery that are generally pushed to the side of the plate and subsequently end up in the bin .... we'll do that too! So, don't hesitate to ask for anything next time you're here - we can generally accommodate most requests ... it's the miracles that take a little longer! See you again soon! xx
