My friend chose the Wanslea, and whilst I was initially afraid that it might be a bit twee and full of elderly couples, this place thankfully seems to have moved with the times. Although it still retains the feel of a traditional family run guesthouse, it has been decorated and furnished in fairly modern style. Our bedroom generally seemed to be fitted out to a higher standard than the price bracket, although unfortunately the laminate flooring in the shower room wasn't in the best condition.
However, I've got to say that the proprietor could not have been more obliging on our arrival. We checked in after a extremely wet days walking on Scafell Pike, with most of our geared soaked through. The guy very kindly took all our gear to the boiler room and handed it to us dry the following morning! Excellent service and not a penny extra for his trouble.
The breakfast comprised the usual English B&B fare, but all good quality. Order sheets are completed the night before and left in the hallway for collection.
The place is situated in easy walking distance of the town centre, although it may not always be possible to park on site as there are only a limited number of spaces.
The Wanslea certainly proved to be very good value for the Lake District, actually being £2 a night cheaper than a twin room in a local YHA!More
