Having stayed at various B&B''s in Ambleside, this was the first time we brought our 2 children (ages 10 &14). Therefore needing a family room to keep costs down we searched out and came across the Fisherbeck Hotel. Having driven passed in many times over the years and always thinking it appeared to bigt and to corperate to be good then I was not sure what to expect. It appeared to have received good reports via tripadvisor and I'm pleased to say that I am now adding my own good report as the hotel was absolutely fine - very clean (really important to us) and the family room was more spacious than I had expected. The staff were really helpful and the owner still smiled the next day despite me stealing her parking space (sorry - didn't see the sign til next morning!). The only noticable concern was the lack of english waitoring staff at breakfast. Not that it was a problem but would recomend an english front person as several members of staff clearly struggled with the language at times. Keep up the good work and we will definately come back.

While on holiday in UK recently, my wife deicided to spend more time with her sister and therefore, we cancelled our trip to Scotland leading to exploring location closeby and hence, decided on Lake District. It was a last minute booking done and we were lucky (yes, I can definitely say that) to get two rooms there.

The location is ideal to visit the lake, do fell walking and some excellent food joints nearby. Breakfast was nice departure from standard buffet. I think, it was very cleverly organised by owners for best utilisation of space and providing personalised service to guests. Since, my wife and I are vegeterian, we were delighted to see the option. I know, you wouldn't get many like us. But, just in case, the breakfast will be difficult for us after 2 days.

I like whiskey and Ray can be a very good tutor. He provided me with wonderful lesson on how to enjoy the Single Malt. If you are there, definitely try some of his carefully selected smokey whiskeys.

Overall, a brilliant place....they are very handy to guide you on local restaurants

The hotel had a very traditional feel to it with patterned carpets and squeaky floorboards. The room was small but clean and the bed was comfortable. Full breakfast was not too greasy and there was a choice of healthy alternatives. Service in the breakfast room was excellent. The location was perfect and there was free parking in front of the hotel.

We stayed at the Fisherbeck for 4 nights. The management and staff were all very helpful. Our room was light and airy with a balcony, the bed was very comfortable, except for the pillows which were flat as a tack and need to be replaced. We could at least leave the door open of a night to get some fresh air. If we couldn't open the door or window the room would have been a little uncomfortable. The shower was a little awkward but the bathroom overall was of a good size. Management also need to review the need for lighter quilts on the beds. The hotel was a short walk to town and to Lake Windermere. Situated on the main road but was set far enough back off the road you didn't hear the traffic. Breakfast was rather regimented with only 1 hour bracket 8:30-9:30 but the selection was good. You could have a continental breakfast earlier if you wanted. Ray, the owner, was always at hand to ask any questions on the area. We would go back if in the area again.

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony room which overlooks the hills.

We stayed at The Fisherbeck for two nights over a weekend in June and were very pleased with the friendliness of the owners and staff. The rooms were clean and comfortable, with a nice lounge downstairs to meet and chat with friends. The breakfast was wonderful; plenty of choice and fantastic quality. I would stay here again, no question.

The Fisherbeck is luxury accomodation in an idylic setting. The proprieters and staff are always friendly, helpful and provide a 5 star service. We have stayed here everytime we have visited the Lakes and have never been dissapointed. Gillian and Ray are the perfect hosts, and remember their guests from year to year. Last year, unbeknown to me I left an item of clothing behind and they posted it on to me - a service I doubt you would get from a corporate hotel chain. The rooms are always spotless, breakfast is excellent and nothing is too much trouble. In fact we liked the bathroom so much we based our own on it!!! Ambleside is the perfect location as a base if you fancy some fell walking, and the Fisherbeck also provide a drying out room in case you get caught in a shower whilst up on those hills. Well done Ray & Gillian, see you in the Spring.
