“Lovely location and Setting”
Reviewed September 6, 2015 for a stay in August 2015

Just returned from a weeks holiday at Halfway House, the cottage is lovely in a lovely setting not far from Ambleside or Windermere. We did enjoy our stay and stayed here with our 2 boys and my In-laws, the only down sides was the upstairs bed was uncomfortable due to the mattress/base, my husband spent most of the night rolling into the middle we tried turning it round but it made no difference! Under the sofas in the lounge and around the sides of the beds hadn't been cleaned very well there was quite a bit of dust and dog hairs under one sofa when looking for one of my children's toys. The heating was set to come on twice a day but most radiators didn't have the temperature controls so couldn't turn them down as the instrutions advised so it got too warm at night and there was no windows to open in the downstairs bedroom.

Thank you for your review and glad to hear that you had a great stay at Halfway house . We will look into your comments and mention this to the housekeeper. The boiler is accessible and the heating is in total control of the guests .
Many thanks

“Lovely holiday cottage - ideal for exploring the Lakes”
Reviewed August 23, 2015 for a stay in August 2015

We loved our stay at Halfway House. The cottage itself is in an ideal location for exploring the Lakes - it's a short drive from Ambleside and lots of places perfect for walking. As others have said it is on a main road which makes for careful exits, it also meant that for us (with small children and a dog) that we couldn't set off for walks from the cottage itself but that wouldn't be a problem for older ramblers. The facilities in the cottage suited us well and it was clean and warm with a great garden.

“Disappointing”

Lovely setting and beautiful historic building, but very much in need of some TLC. The downstairs bedroom smelled strongly of mould and mildew, and all our clothing felt damp by the second morning. There was obviously a serious damp problem as there was a large damp stain on the ceiling of one of the upstairs bedrooms.
The shower in the downstairs bathroom spurted out more water from the joint between the head and the hose than it did from the head, but at least it was usable - with neither wall hook nor curtain, it wasn't possible to have a shower upstairs.
The dishwasher was rickety, it took two people to pull the top shelf out as one had to catch the wheels which fell off the shelf runners every time. And it wasn't actually tall enough to take a standard sized dinner plate. One of the living room light fittings didn't work - we tried changing the bulb but it made no difference.
We had to clean the fridge before we could put food in it.

Management Response

Thank you for your review . . The house is 17th century with solid walls and in recent years we have put in new double glazed windows updated radiators we haven't had an issue with damp. Prior to your stay we had a slipped slate which had caused the damp patch on the ceiling which was rectified. I did contact the guests as I was concerned whom did mention that the dampness to their clothes left the next day .
I really find this puzzling as this issue hasn't occurred before and rectified itself the next day . We are happy to deal with any queries during guests stay customer satisfaction is important to us .

Wonderful cottage, all amenities provided loo roll washing up liquid etc so don't take any.
Slightly out of ambleside but makes it much nicer than staying in a bandb.

“A fabulous, homeley cottage!”
Reviewed February 23, 2015 for a stay in February 2015

I booked this cottage as a surprise for my mams birthday. Liz (the owner) was extremely helpful, nothing was a problem. The cottage was a good size,we fed ducks on the decking on the morning and had beautiful views. It was warm and cosy.A cot and highchair were provided for my 1 yr old nephew.Everything we needed was supplied glassware etc.it's not too far from ambleside centre, a bit tricky walking because of footpaths but That wouldn't put us off staying here again.thanks Liz.
