“Warm & Cosy, but doesn't live up to the hype of other reviews”

I believe Tripadvisor is all about providing honest and informative appraisals to other travellers and I believe in being honest in my appraisal of any holiday stays I have experienced, particularly when travelling to other parts of the world and paying for accommodation. I also believe in pointing out the good and the bad (if any) as it helps those looking for enjoyable accommodation options, but more importantly it provides an opportunity to congratulate the property owner/manager on their standard of accommodation. It also gives them the opportunity to make adjustments and improvements if and when required according to reviews - that is why I always try to be unbiased in my reviews.

With that said, my husband and I recently stayed for five nights at 5 Smithy Brow, Ambleside, and to be perfectly honest, the experience was a little disappointing. Having read the reviews prior to making the booking, I was expecting a higher standard. Don't get me wrong, there wasn't anything particularly negative but I think it's a bit over-rated.

On a positive note, the location is perfect and within walking distance of the town centre with heaps of options for either shopping to stock the pantry for cooking at home or visiting many of the lovely cafe's and restaurants in Ambleside and we had no trouble finding the property when we first arrived in Ambleside. However, parking can be a bit of problem if you have a medium to large vehicle as there are four other cottages adjacent to #5, so parking can be very tight.

It is also wise to bring your own linen and towels, otherwise there is a charge of 12GBP for their supply (prearranged when doing the booking). In our situation, being visitors from overseas, we agreed to pay the fee, but unfortunately I forgot to include this fee in the funds transfers so I pre-arranged to have the money on arrival, which we did. But there was a slight oversight and only the bed was made up, but no towels provided (we had to make phone call to the owner), so I would suggest that you bring supplies yourself and don't worry about paying the fee.

The bathroom is extremely roomy, however, in order to have a shower, it requires sitting in the bathtub as the shower hose is very short - great for children but not so user-friendly for adults.

The kitchen is serviceable and contains a great gas hob and stove along with a microwave and pantry and I loved the barn style back door, which you can close the lower half and have the upper half open to let in the sunlight and warmth.

On the whole, the stay was reasonably comfortable, and a good base to stay at when visiting the Lakes District but it would not be my first choice of accommodation if visiting the area again.

Management Response
Jul 11, 2014
We advertise a bath not a shower. The rubber shower hose for the taps is just an added extra for the convenience of guests. We do not normally provide towels but had offered to do so at no extra cost for these guests coming from abroad. We had temporally forgotten them, but took them within 5 mins of a reminder! Our prices are extremely reasonable compared to others even with linen hire. This system simply allows families to save a little if they wish.

Stayed for three nights, this cottage is lovely, great central location, great pub almost next door the golden rule you must visit. Cottage is 2 mins away from the centre of Ambleside, try Lily's for excellent food and a great atmosphere and very helpful friendly staff. The cottage is very well equipped everything you need for a great stay. Would gladly return, the owner called to see us on Saturday to make sure everything was ok.

Loved it, loved it, loved it! We stayed for 2 nights, party of 4 adults. Beautiful beamed traditional cute cottage, sash windows, low ceilings, it was fabulous and very cosy. Good central heating plus a gas fire so it's very toasty if needed. Well equipped too, books, monopoly and jigsaws, loo roll we cooked and found all the things we needed plus more, washing up liquid, brown sauce, cooking, oil, salt and pepper to name a few. Great location just a 2 minute walk to the shops pubs and restaurants including spar, tesco and co op. We would highly recommend staying here and would definatly stay here again.

We had a really great short-break in Ambleside, staying at this cottage. It's very central for visiting the Lakes and Ambleside has everything you want. The parking outside the cottage was very convenient, too. We appreciated all the thoughtful, homely touches in the property and the really warm bathroom!

“Lovely little find!”

This was a cracking little find in the perfect place. It is a lovely, well equipped cottage a stones throw away from town. 10 meters up the road is a cracking little pub and less than a minutes walk down the road and you are in town.

Upon arrival, the cottage was clean and tidy and the directions given by the owner were great. The cottage has lots of character with the low beamed ceilings and whitewashed walls in the living room.

It is a little bit of a squeeze getting all 4 cars in the driveway, but as long as everyone is considerate it isn't a problem. I would advise you reverse in to make it easier getting out.

Only 2 small niggles which in no way would stop me from returning by the way. The tv is tiny (15") a 17" or 21 " would have been nice so we didn't have to sit so close, not that we watched a lot but was nice to watch a film with the family after a hard days holidaying. Also the shower attachment was rather useless. It seemed you either had boiling hot water or freezing cold water coming out of it.

I did a quick walk around video with the camera before we left. Which can be viewed on the youtube link below.

I would definitely recommend this place as it was a very nice place and very reasonably priced. I am positive we will return again someday!
