“Very peaceful hotel”
Reviewed October 26, 2013

Stayed here for two nights, room was a signature room number 166 which is on the first floor, it is a separate building from the hotel building set among trees , very nice room with a Jacuzzi bath which was a nice bonus. The swimming pool and steam room was very good, but the main Jacuzzi was not lit up and no overhead lighting which made it look very dull and drab. Breakfast was lovely, plenty of choice of fresh fruits, cereals, full English cooked breakfast and lots of cakes and danish pastries etc. I really enjoyed my stay and had a very quiet relaxing time . Would recommend it . Tried Wainwrights Pub, food was very nice but the Pub looks a bit tired and in need of refurbishment, very pricey for pub grub but they have a captive audience as there is not much competition. The Britannia Pub was very nice in Elterwater but you would need to book a table as it gets very busy. Craved chocolate on the first night of our stay, no shops for miles, but there is a chocolate vending machine near the swimming pool reception :-)

Room Tip: If you chose a Signature Room request a first floor room , room 166 is very nice.

I wish there was a rating for GOOD!!! We didn't find it average - but I feel that very good is stretching it a bit! The setting is beautiful - and wandering around is lovely. Some of the staff were great. The Leisure area was lovely - but some of the pool in covered in a bumpy (i want to say pebble dash) substance - and both of my sons ended up with cut feet - but there is lots of space and it wasn't too busy. The room itself had a feel of an upmarket motel - not in the main building - but was fine, clean and appeared to have been refurbished quite recently - the spa bath was a treat. We thought that the boys would get bunk beds - but instead had to share a sofa bed - which is okay, but not ideal. Dinner in the Wainwright Pub was nice - the walk was a slight challenge - taking the kids along the road, but the food was good - and it feels like a proper Lakeland Pub. Breakfast was nice - I feel that for the price, I would have liked the staff to offer and bring toast - instead of making your own. The selection of fresh fruit was good and pastries and croissants was great - and nicely displayed on local slate. The stay, all in all was good - the location is the real bonus - but not really worth the price when compared to some of the other Lakeland hotels.

This is a beautiful area to visit with breathtaking scenery and fabulous places to walk/discover. We booked a double lakeland signature room- it was pleasant enough, but the entrance area into the actual room was tatty, the bathroom needed updating, the shower failed to work and the bath had not been cleaned. This was, however, rectified by the management as soon as possible. That aside, the leisure centre was well maintained and a haven on a wet day.
In the evening we had a meal at the hotel in Purdeys restaurant, which was nice but expensive. Breakfast the following morning was filling, with a good choice of food-all the staff were polite and efficient.
We couldn't help feeling something was missing here, parts of the hotel need updating and it seems expensive in comparison to other hotels we have visited in the area.

Branded as Brimstone Hotel this is actually a new development in the Langdale Estate which includes the Langdale Hotel, numerous up market self catering lodges as well as some off site accommodation. Situated in the centre of the English lake district (almost literally if you use the OS 1:25000 maps) there is great countryside and many walks on the door step. You are also within short driving distance of Ambleside, Grassmere, Conniston and Hawkshead in addition to the central lake land fells. The estate is kept to a very high standard and is served by a leisure centre, couple of bars and restaurants catering for a wide range of tastes.
This new addition is in the no expense spared category of luxury hotels rooms, for example our suite had a baths in the lounge in front of the real log fire and 42” TV. Upstairs on a mezzanine was the bed, another 42” TV and a shower room. All the rooms are on first and second floor levels with generous balconies that look out over the estate and the hills beyond. There is also a reading room stocked with free wine, beer and snacks. The staff are attentive and always trying to help. In short we enjoyed our stay. Having said all that it ain't cheap but this place is more than just a cut above the rest.
Any downsides, well only if you want to be picky, the leisure centre was updated a few years ago but it can seem busy with relatively few people in it. The food on site is a little over fussy for my taste and over priced especially in the restaurant (the buffet breakfasts are great by the way) and yes it rains in the lake district nearly every time I go, big surprise!
Will we go again? Well when we've saved up for many years, maybe, and in the meantime we're going to spend New Year in a self catering lodge, I'll have to make my own breakfasts but the accommodation is as good and generally works out a little cheaper!

Room Tip: There are no bad rooms at Brimstones

We've stayed here many times and even got married here.
Unfortunately the atmosphere has changed slightly.
The rooms used to be immaculate and it used to seem good value for money as a result.
Some of the rooms are in need of refurbishment. The last stay revealed the bath base full of filler and mould all around the edge.
The worst change is from a full waitress breakfast to a DIY breakfast. This initially didn't include queuing up to toast your own toast. The experience is now no better than a bargain basement hotel. I can make my own toast at home!
All in all they've taken their eye off the ball and provide a lower standard of room and service for an ever increasing price.
We will still go back in hope that it will improve.

A beautiful place - 100% classy. Food tremendous. We went for our honeymoon and really loved it. There's also a nice pub down the road if you fancy a change of scenery for a great meal too! Obviously the surrounding is beautiful. All the staff very pleasant.

Had a lovely weekend break at this hotel. Great for walking with stunning scenery. Room was very nice and although the bathroom was quite spacious, it was let down by the power of the shower. There is one thing that I cannot understand and that is why there is an extra charge for kippers at breakfast. Surely it cannot be the cost as they are quite cheap to buy. Other hotels we have stayed at seemed to have dropped the charge, Will the Langdale follow?
