“Great for all the family including the dog”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2013

I booked online as a last minute treat for two adults three children, 11, 6 and 5 and the dog. I was a bit apprehensive as some pet friendly accommodation can be a bit 'whiffy'. Brathay was easy to find and we were able to park right next to the room which, being pet friendly was located in a ground floor annex..a great bonus with the children, bags and a dog.

We were greeted by a very friendly receptionist who took time to give us all the information about the accommodation and the area.

We stayed in room 6. End of the annex. I was very pleasantly surprised by the tasteful decor which was warm and comfortable. There was adequate furniture, small table and chairs, dressing table, two wardrobes. Beds were immaculate. And there was a wooden floor which was fab as this didn't hold 'doggy' smells like carpet would. Tea, coffee and hot chocolate provided and if you run out you just let yourself into the main building to replenish. There is also a DVD player and DVD's in the main building which you can borrow.

The bathroom was bright and clean with toiletries and clean white towels.

We had a walk to Waterhead which is within easy reach although take care as the path is narrow and the road busy in parts.

We're familiar with the Lakes and although there are some lovely eateries in Ambleside we had a drive to Threkeld 'Horse and Farrier' for a lovely meal served by lovely staff.£50 for the five of us for a main and two rounds of drinks.

We returned with three children eager to try the Jacuzzi bath. Jacuzzi + 2p piece of 'Lush' bubble bar + children = happy!!

Great night sleep, warm and comfortable. Woke to snow!!

Breakfast was lovely, meat, cheese, fruit, croissants, muffins, toast, crumpets, cereal. Beautifully presented and fresh. You can get a tray and take breakfast to your room which is a great touch. We chose to stay in the dining room. The children hardly ate anything however so £41 for them was a bit steep. Trevor made sure everything was replenished and dirty pots cleared away. He was attentive but not 'in your face'.

I would return and would stay in the annex even if doggy was not with us as it seems private.

Room Tip: We had end annex room 6 which was spacious and private.

Arrived on Mon 19th Feb, greeted by the owners. Very friendly and welcoming. Trevor gave us a quick and helpful tour of the lodge showing us everything we needed. Very well set up for dogs for a small fee of £7 you get your own access and pet friendly room (which did NOT smell of dogs in any way). Very clean and comfortable room within a 5 min walk of the centre of Ambleside. Spa bath in the room and good breakfast facilities, the only negative was lack of a cooked breakfast; however there was an excellent spread of continental breakfasts which you can take to your room.

Stayed here at the end of January for our Ruby Wedding Anniversary it was great would stay again, but hopefully not in a snow blizzard as was the case with us
The rooms are very comfy and warm to warm for me sometimes, we stayed in a dog friendly room in the annexe. Beds were ok for us,but we like hard beds, breakfast was quite good plenty of choice and was offered porridge as it was so cold, very thoughtfull.Good clean place to stay give it a try.

Just got home fom a 2 night stay at Brathay Lodge. What a lovely hotel with the friendliest owner ever! The 4 poster room was lovely, really spacious and comfortable with a great view, the jacuzzi bath a real treat after an 8 mile walk, and breakfast was one of the best continental breakfasts ever! Ambleside is a great little town, Zefferellis veggie restaurant was amazing. Fantastic couple of days all round :-)

Room Tip: Go for the 4 poster!

My wife and I visit Ambleside regularly and have been doing so for the past 6 years.

With a last minute change of plan for our wedding anniversary due to the wonderful English climate, we looked on t'internet for places to stay. We have stopped at several nice hotels in the past but wanted somewhere central to Ambleside. I recall vaguely having stopped here many many years ago, so we looked on the internet and the photographs of the rooms were very clear and reviews decent (other than those moaning about not having a cooked breakfast).

So on that point, we will start with the breakfast. I am one of those cooked breakfast people who enjoys them when staying away. But having said that the website clearly states what sort of breakfast is on offer. And we decided to take the room with the breakfast on offer. I must say we both really enjoyed the breakfast. Plenty of food to help yourself to - lots of meats, fresh salmon, cheese, cherry tomatoes, pastries, fruits, nuts, yoghurts. Could go up to the breakfast buffet as many times as you wanted. All in all a hearty breakfast and very enjoyable setting us both up for each of the 2 days we stopped there. Contrary to some comments regarding the breakfast room area, seating and tables were absolutely fine (and I'm just short of 6 foot). And anyway all residents have the option of taking their breakfasts to their own rooms if they so wish.

The company? Very good. Nice and friendly and exactly what you want from a B&B type accommodation. Never too in your face but always willing to answer questions relating to our stay.

The bedroom? We stopped in one of the 4 poster bed rooms - room 18. A large sized room, excellent view of the church and green over the road, lovely bathroom with jacuzzi bath. Good television that worked fine and a dvd player (with a selection of dvd's available downstairs).

Particular points of note are that there was always really hot water available and the room was always well-heated - both aspects which can very often be found missing in similar accommodation. A major plus.

We will definitely be back to stay again - and on some occasions with our youngest lad - it is clear that the hotel is fully equipped to be able to cater for all the ages our family would require (from 3 to 40).

Only slight point would be to say that the bed mattress was perhaps a little harder than we would have liked - but by far not the worst we have ever slept in - and that said, it would and will not prevent us from returning for a number of stays in the future.

Overall, we are both very happy we picked this location - great room, great food, and excellent customer service.

Just got back from a weekend away at the Brathay Lodge.
We arrived late due to the snowy weather travelling conditions but Trevor the owner had arranged easy access into our superior room that was situated in the annex. We had our own entrance.
Trevor kindly dug a path in the snow to help us park and even helped us in with the luggage at 1030pm.
The room was clean, bed was comfy and there was enough room to have a travel cot up without any problem.
The breakfast is served in the main building. Continental breakfast only but this is not a negotiate. Plenty of choice of cereal, toast, crumpets, fruit, cheese, meat, nuts, boiled eggs and porridge if you like. You even have the choice to take your breakfast back to your room.
The lodge is centrally located and only 2 minutes from the centre. Easy walk to the Ambleside quay to catch the boat.
Would highly recommend.
