Lovely B&B, the best I have stayed in at Ambleside. Fantastic location in the centre of town close to numerous restaurants & pubs. The building itself a little quirky & full of character. The staff are all genuinely friendly & helpful, with plenty off local knowledge. The pool sauna & hot tub are a huge bonus & raise the place above the ordinary B&B. Excellent breakfast too. I will definitely stay again.

Room Tip: The four poster room (No 6) we stayed in has two windows, both have fantastic views.

This is the second time we've stayed at the old vicarage and it won't be the last. It's in an excellent position in the centre of Ambleside there are plenty of restaurants close by one I would definitely recommend is Dodds. I have returned home totally relaxed. The staff are friendly and helpful more like friends they will help with any walks giving advice etc. It's lovely to return from a day on the fells to be able to take advantage of the swimming pool, sauna and hot tub I would recommend without hesitation.

Just spent two nights at this lovely, slightly quirky, bed and breakfast. We stayed in a four poster room, slightly unnerving at night as it overlooked the most beautiful church (was sure I saw shadows and heard creaks in the middle of the night). Reviews indicate that this hotel is a little tired around the edges. This is true, however it only adds to the charm of the place. Lots of the furniture remains from the vicarage itself. For owl lovers, this is the place for you, I feel the owners have an obsession as they adorn every available surface! Lovely and hearty breakfasts both mornings, relaxing swim, sauna and hot tub and great recommendation to eat at Sheila's Cottage Restaurant by the owner. Had the best meal ever, with a 10% discount thrown in by way of a card supplied by the hotel. Would definitely stay again, and recommend to those who do not seek a contemporary and shiny exterior.

First time we have stayed here and to be honest very disappointed. The hotel smells by what I can only describe as a sweet, stale, fried food smell, not at all pleasant, no matter what time of day the smell lingered, the only saving grace was at breakfast time when the fresh fried food smell masked the older lingering smell.
The pool area was clean although the pool was quite cold so couldn't spend long in it.
The b&b's decor is dated, gloomy and the carpets have seen better, our room was a major disappointment, again dated decor, the pressure in the shower was either there or it wasn't, the hot water tap in the bath was loose, making you fear that if you turned it on the pipes underneath would break and flood. Both the toilet roll holder and shower soap dispenser are the ones found in commercial or industrial locations, not at all what you would have at a home from home location.
Our sleep wasn't restful, the pillows had seen better days and the covers itched like mad - whatever washing powder they use isn't skin friendly, and I don't usually suffer from complaints like this.
All I can say is that we must have had the B&B's worst room, we read the other reviews when booking and felt safe in the mind that it was a good choice, we aren't fussy but it was a major let down.
In my honest opinion it is vastly over priced, we have stayed in far nicer accommodation in the lakes for much less a cost. I honestly think that the owners need to close down for a few weeks, gut the place and redecorate and install new carpets only then will it offer a really enjoyable experience.

Just got back from a two night stay at the Old Vicarage, we had a great time, our room number 8 which has two rooms, a single bed for our three year old and a kingsize in our room. The bathroom has a walk in shower and seperate Jacuzzi bath, well decorated and modern. The tv has a built in dvd player which was great for our son. The pool, jacuzzi, sauna were alL excellent. we had a great time, I have read some of the negative reviews, ie pool to cold, water in the jacuzzi to high, To exspensive. Really!

There we several couples with dogs, they made no noise and were no threat to our three year old.

We will be back for sure, as we could not fault anything.

Room Tip: Room 8 two rooms.

We visited in mid January after seeing reviews on TripAdvisor. When we arrived we were greated by a jolly gentleman stocking up the coal supplies for the fire as it had been a crisp night previously and they were expecting the same that night! We were shown up to to our room by one of the ladies who then offered us a pot of tea in the front room when we were ready. Our room was exeptional. Very tidy, very well presented and with what looked like a newly fitted bathroom. We couldnt have asked for more! There was also a handy mini fridge that we could use for our own drinks etc. In our room there was a dvd and video player. Lots of book cases full of titles to choose from in the hall ways so if you were bored you had plenty to choose from.

We only stayed the one night but from what we saw we were very impressed and will be staying here again some time.

One little note however, the car park is a little tight. Dont let this put you off, more of a heads-up!

Just got back from a six night stay at The Old Vicarage Ambleside. On arrival we were greeted by a charming member of staff who offered us a fresh pot of coffee and biscuits. We found the room of a very high standard, with everything you need including a spa bath, fridge, tea and coffee making facilities, TV with DVD player and even a vhs player. There is also a great selection of films to go at. We found the staff at the hotel to be friendly and very helpful. Nothing was too much trouble, they will even provide plates etc if you want to bring a take away back and eat it in the comfort of your room. If you are a dog owner you can take your dog free of charge. After reading some reviews on trip adviser I find it difficult to believe some of the comments that some people have made, especially the ones that are made twelve months after the visit. I have never written a review before but I (we) find it unfair that such a well run business should be criticized by picky rude people. Thanks to all the staff for making our stay so perfect. Can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: All rooms are of high standard.
