We rented a cottage just next to the hotel for New Year 2013/14 and used the bar and Restaurant . Both great. Excellent food staff very friendly, we had a small incident with the meal but it was very professionally dealt with and the manager was fantastic. Great place to eat and some nice ales too.

Will definitely be back. Great location lots to see and do in the local area. Highly recommended .

We now stayed a couple of times for the - All Year Madness Special Offer - 2 night Dinner Bed & Breakfast package.
Its rare to find a hotel that allows a family dog to stay too, but this hotel was very welcoming.
On both occasions, the bedrooms (10 and then 15) were ideal and very spacious. The evening meals were lovely and each course well presented and tasty. The breakfast was very good too. We would highly recommend you to book this deal as the hotel is as ideal for families as it is for couples or singles.
Ambleside, for example, is near enough to enjoy along with all that the Lake District can offer as the hotel is in a good central location - its also quiet and peaceful at night.

Room Tip: The bedrooms were at the back of the hotel, on both occasions, above the Talbot Bar. The rooms were...

This was our third visit to this Hotel. We Stayed from 1st - 6th December 2013 as part of a larger group. We stayed in room 12 which is one of the larger room and has a whirlpool bath. (there is an extra charge for the larger rooms). Unlike last year there was plenty of hot water which is what is needed to rest the aching bones after a trip up Helvellyn. The hotel itself is comfortable and clean but is beginning to look slightly dated and may be in need of a makeover in the not too distant future. I thought that the room rates were a little on the high side when compared to other parts of the country but never having stayed anywhere else in the Lake District perhaps their rates are the norm.
I am surprised that one reviewer found that the food was occasionally "awful". During our stay we could not fault it and found that the meals were presented to the highest standard. Still everyone has different tastes and what suits one does not necessarily suit another. When it comes to the choice of menu there is a wide variety of options, additionally you can chose from the bar menu if there is nothing you fancy on the main menu. The bar food is good old simple English pub grub served in quantities to satisfy the hungriest hiker, whilst the main menu goes for the fancier restaurant food. The choice is yours.
I had one disappointment with our stay in the lakes (not with the hotel). My wife and I are used to walking in Austria so when our friends announced on morning that we were going to the top of Helvellyn I thought good, we would catch the cable car to the top and walk back down. But guess what, no cable car! Having got over the shock I was consoled with the fact that when we did get to the top we would see Julia Bradbury on Striding Edge, disappointment again, the top was shrouded in low cloud, we could not see Striding Edge let alone Julia Bradbury.

Room Tip: All rooms are perfectly adequate but if you like space pay extra and choose a larger one

Stayed here for a third time on 29th and 30th November. Stayed in the Grasmere room which is well appointed and disabled friendly. The bathroom has a bath and a walk in shower. Staff are friendly, efficient and very helpful. Evening meals were excellent as were the breakfasts. Will be back soon I hope. The hotel is well situated ideal for exploring the surrounding countryside. B.T. Glasgow

This is a well run 3 star hotel in a beautiful part of The Lakes. You can park your car up and enjoy some great walks and pubs on the way.
The hotel ticks all the boxes for comfort and a relaxed atmosphere. We stayed in room 11 this time which was clean and large although dated in places. The bed was very comfortable, there was hot water whenever you and we had a good size bath.
The barman was excellent, the beers were very well kept. Good selection. The food is very good value for money, varied choice, proper vegetables and good selection of meat. Breakfast was a wholesome cooked breakfast with all the normal items. The staff were attentive, very cheerful and welcoming. The lounge is great for after meals, to have coffee on tap and mints! Internet access is good from the lounge.
We spend a lot of time in The Lakes and look for good value and a homely feel, Skelwith Bridge ticks all the boxes.

Back again, same old place, comfortable and retiring, no showboating here. Adequate, not roomy bedrooms, but still good showers and plenty of hot water for the walkers. But the kitchen, oh dear, unpredictable as ever, sometimes OK, but occasionally awful. Why can't someone control standards. Still good value in the "posey" Lakeland world of "Country House " hotels ,

This a lovely traditional hotel. It has a relaxing homely feel and is the ideal place to return to after a days walking in the Lakes. The rooms are spotless and the breakfasts are enough to last you all day!
