Hi there, last year I stayed there for two nights in a double room, bigger rooms with 4 or more beds are available too, but check online. The small rooms can be booked upfront if you contact the manager. Rooms are simple as it is not a hotel and is really more for people exploring the Lake District, thus only stay there to eat & sleep. Kitchen is well equipped, but you more or less need your own food. Staff very friendly and even welcomed us after opening hours. Its a good sleep as its very calm in Ambleside, just lovely.

Staying here with a group of friends at a weekend. Bedrooms were OK with clean linen. Only a washbasin in the room, but we were fine with that. Shower room is basic, with limited changing facilities, but piping hot water.

Kitchen facilities were good - you can bring and cook your own food if you wish. You can help yourself to the cereals, toast and tea & coffee provided.

Parking was a bit of an issue - you have to find this on street somewhere. We couldn't use the small car park next to the hostel.

A good stay for the price.

Stayed there for a couple of nights recently and had a great time. Facilities at the hostel are good, a kitchen for preparing food and a large dining room, place overall was clean and beds were comfertable. Staff are very friendly and welcoming. Only complaints would be the lack of toilets/showers and the floors being so squeaky, it's impossible to move without making a racket which makes it hard to follow the no noise after 11 rule. On street parkings not so great either.

Overall a handy place to stay, easy walk into town with loats of places to go nearby, I would recommend Amblesides only club in sportsters bar as an interesting place to try.

We have both stayed in hostels all around the world but have to say that this was the best nights sleep we have ever had. Comfortable beds with new thick mattresses!!!

The hostel was clean and comfortable with great powerful showers, well needed after a day's hiking to Sca Fell.

The kitchen is large and clean and great for cooking meals if you are stopping for a while, otherwise pub grub and places to eat are within a few minutes walk.

We would recommend this hostel to young and old. A great base for walkers.

Well Done David for making this hostel homely and thanks for the check-up call after our hike in severe weather, much appreciated.

a perfect backpackers base in ambleside, 2 minutes from the bus stop, getting there and getting away - 2 minutes walk into centre of town to pubs, eateries etc.
rooms have views of the fells, coming back from a day walking it was a pleasure to sit by the window & watch the sunset over the peaks. the hostel itself is a homely, exceptionally friendly and clean, well run traditional cottage. lovely, cosy large living room, huge communal kitchen and separate cosy dining room. on tap tea and coffee and milk supplied form the local dairy. a perfect base for anyone, really couldnt give it a higher recommendation.

I write this review to anyone who fancies a weekend away with the boys. 20 of us are currently recovering from a 4 day stag do to Ambleside. We stayed at the Backpackers Hostel. Obviously when we booked the Hostel we made no secret about the fact there where 20 blokes coming away on a Stag weekend. The accomodation is very pleasent, the rooms are what they say on the box, We had no lock on our door and although we had the whole top floor we where out for most of the day. So lockers where provided.
There is a problem with parking, if you are taking a large mini bus. The access road is very narrow with yellow lines outside, there is enough space for two or three cars outside the complex but its a real struggle to park a van.
There was a problem with noise, we where made to feel like we where on school trip with the manager of the Hostel being the head master. A piano in the communial room could have been real fun. I'm sure anyone can understand that when you have a trained classical pianst and a fair amount of alchol the two come together for a good old fashioned sing along !!! That lasted all of one song, before we got banned. Owh.
If you are a student living on a grant and want to se the lakes and don't mind be told to shut up every minute after 11pm then this is your place. If you are on a stag do.. ..Owh....... YOU DECIDE !!!!
Maybe a caravan park for the Likies !!!

Dear All
Since we took over in 2007 we have decided NOT to accept bookings from Stag, Hen or single sex drinking groups. Sorry that this has limited your options in the Lakes, there are however other hostels that do still take Stag parties etc and we hope you have a great time .
