Owner description: Mock-Gothic castle sitting on the Windermere shores, with turrets, towers and informal grounds.Wray Castle came to us without its contents so you will not see a 'typical' National Trust house full of paintings, furniture and antiques with an accompanying owner-family history through the ages. What you will see is a 'tired' but fascinating building with hints of its ‘grand’ past and plenty of signs of its varied history (a history that shows in its fixtures and fittings right up to the 1990s, including numbers on room doors and institutional paint-schemes). Make sure you join one of our free tours to get its full life story. If you've children to entertain you'll be pleased to know the rooms may be empty of grand possessions but full of kids having fun in our dressing up and story-telling spaces, perfect for a wet day in the Lakes! There’s plenty to do outdoors too, like rope swing, den-building and trails, in our family-friendly gardens and grounds.

“Wray Castle”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 8, 2014

Went to Wray Castle during May half term holiday during a trip to the Lake District.
Two friends were with us and had to pay entry as they were not NT members, and from what they saw will probably not now ne joining.
The castle and grounds could be fantastic but currently the facility is very badly managed and is made over to childrens activities.
Parking is limited and unco-ordinated.
Catering facilities are basic with very limited tables and chairs- OK if you want to sit on the floor.
Renovations are obviously in hand but look as though they have yet to start.
No period furniture of any sort in the property.
Generally not worth a visit particularly if you have to pay.

“The best NT for kids on a rainy day”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 4, 2014

Went to Wray Castle with low expectations as we knew the National Trust had taken it over with nothing in so to speak but its fantastic what they have done with the rooms, they had foam bricks in one, dressing up in another, big jenga bricks in another and much more, they have an indoor picnic area if the weather isn't good, there is a really nice woodland walk down to the lake and from the castle the views are breathtaking, a visit here really is a must if you are staying on Windermere or nearby.
Make sure you get there early if driving as their car park gets full quickly, especially on rainy days.

“Awesome for kids”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 4, 2014 via mobile

Wray castle was a little bit of a surprise find, we took our little boy (nearly 3) who like us loves castles! Stunning from the outside but really not like a traditional castle once you go inside. Was built as a stately home in 1846 but is not set up as a period house. It is however set up incredibly well for children with activities in most of the rooms ranging from castle building to dressing up!

Our son had an awesome time but if you don't have children and not an nt member not sure I would have paid the 8 pounds each per adult!

“Interesting visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 2, 2014

Not at all what I expected. The verbal history was very interesting and the location, on the banks of Windermere, was quite spectacular. The house was devoid of furniture but there were several rooms given over to providing enjoyment for children. An ideal venue for parents with young children; not so interesting for people in their 70s. Worth a visit, especially in good weather but as far as I am concerned, it is only worth 1 visit.

“first time visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 2, 2014

Been the Lakes for 30 years but only just made a visit here. Castle is ok (not the most interesting of the National Trusts as no real content, just a few posters re history) and enough to keep kids busy for an hour if raining, but grounds are excellent with outdoor play area for 6yrs+ and great walking area alongside lakeside. Café is small but has all the basics and staff were extremely friendly and helpful
