We took our 2 granddaughters (aged 8 and almost 10) here on a wet afternoon. The 8 year old had never climbed before and after some routine instruction and acclimatisation work she was able to climb the full height on the main walls, The instructor paid them a lot of attention and made sure they were well briefed before attempting a climb and provided good help and support during the entire session.

My boys ages 8 and 11 had an excellent experience at the climbing wall and their teacher Simon had great knowledge and patience with them. There was plenty of variety for the hour and half session. Well worth a visit. There is also a nice cafe to have a drink while the kids are entertained.

Nice little place, had a morning there when rain killed our other plans. Its not got the highest walls but the problems were pretty well set.

There are plenty of routes and also a steep wall with a mix of natural features and regularly changed routes. a good mix of top roped and lead routes available. There is a bouldering area too, again with regularly changed routes and plenty of variety. Seems to be good for beginners too, and also how helpful the instructors are.

It may surprise you to learn that the Lakes can be wet sometimes .....and when that happens rock climbing can be a little .....er....... worrying.
So if you are lucky enough to be holidaying in Ambleside - in rhe rain - then the Ambleside Climbing Wall is your get-out-of-jail card.
Simply register - do the questionnaire about your experience and tie-on. Plenty of routes to 'top rope' - but you can 'lead' also if you want. Also there is a bouldering cave. If you want to cut loose and hit some hard low level moves then crimp away until your finger ends fall off. if you simply want to watch your mates, your sons and daughters having fun that's OK - there is a viewers gallery looking down on your struggles.
All the gear you need can be hired on the premises - you can purchase stuff too. Finally you may need to rehydrate and re-energise. No problem - drinks and simple foods on sale to keep your levels up.
