We stayed here for two nights over a weekend. The room was very comfortable and we had a great view of the Langdale valley from out of the window. The staff were all helpful and they served good beers in the bar, at a reasonable cost. We had dinner in the hotel on one of the nights and really enjoyed the food which was very tasty and we both thought that the portion size was good. The price for the hotel wasnt too bad compared to the general price in the Lakes and was reasonsable value for money. We would definitely stay there again.

We had high expectations, given the price and the recommendations we'd had. It turned out to be ok but pretty average.

The day before we went, they tried to get us to change the type of room we'd booked. I'm not sure why and they didn't elaborate, so that was an odd start. In the event, we stuck with the room we booked which was reasonably spacious with double aspect and lovely views. The furniture and decoration was a bit tired though they are refurbishing bit by bit.

Dinner in the dining room was a bizarre experience and I would suggest eating the bar or one of the other pubs near by instead. As the dining room was practically empty, it seemed odd to be kept in the lounge without the wine we'd ordered until we asked. I later saw the comments the owner previously made about choosing at leisure, but a little explanation of that procedure or choice of what you would like to do might be a good idea. The food was nice enough but pretty average and the portions on the small side. The worst thing about the meal was the fact that they noisily cleared the entire dining room of the dinner settings while we were still eating our dessert. I understand that they need to set up for breakfast but we were not particularly late and it doesn't create a pleasant ambience to eat in. We took flight with the rest of our wine to the peace and quiet of our room. Breakfast, however, was really good.

This hotel is in an amazing location but, all in all, the place seemed to be run for the convenience of the establishment rather than for the pleasure of the guest. We go to the Lakes at least once a month to go walking and stay at lots of places at various price levels. In our experience, we have had much higher quality experience elsewhere when we have paid this price level and even in places which have charged considerably less.

Thank you for your comments, all orders lncuding wine orders are taken in our lounge, we ask what time you would like to eat and bring you into our dining room at the time of your choice, the wine is normally served at the table unless requested otherwise, as people like to have a pre dinner drink in the lounge. We have taken on board your comments about clearing other tables whilst our dinners are still eating and about the size of the portions. As mentioned in other comments we are continuing with our re furbishments and we are having the hall and stairs decorated early 2013.

My wife and I have stayed here in October for several year's now. The mid week breaks are well worth the money. There is redecoration being done and the hotel is now much smarter than it was when we first stayed.
The food continues to be good and the portions generous.

Room Tip: The cost of an upgrade to a better quality room we think is worth it.

We chose to stay here for the location as our plan for the weekend was to climb the Langdale Pikes and go up Jack's Rake...which we did! Couldn't be in a more beautiful setting, it really is stunning. Staff were very welcoming and helpful.the room was small and over priced for the size, but the location and views are just priceless! Stunning view from the room and lying on the bed watching the clouds roll in and out over hills was lovely.very comfy bed too. Hotel conveniently set at the bottom of the Ghyll for the start of our Langdale Pike ascent. The food was tasty and very good. We ate in the dining room each night and could choose from both the dining room and the bar menu, plenty of choice. Staff again, very attentive. We missed breakfast on our first day as we set off early to start our climb, although breakfast was so good on our second day, we wish we had set off later! Hotel itself is a little tired in areas but it's location cannot be topped. We would stay again. The only negative comment is the over powering smell of disinfectant in the bar area which seems to linger for the day. We stayed when Marc Atkinson played. We sat outside until 11.30pm and were treated to his amazing music. Superb evening...cherry on the top of a great stay!

What lovely comments, thanks very much. We are on a rolling programme of refurbishing the hotel, we are closing in very early January and decorating the hall and stairs and we have 3 bedrooms left to decorate, these are being done in November this year.We all agree that the singer was great and i have just booked him for for several gigs for this year and next.

We stayed for 3 nights in June. Lovely location and pretty hotel. Room was very small, with sloping ceilings which made it feel even smaller and was slightly awkward for my husband who is over 6 foot tall. Having said that, the room was spotless and the bed very comfortable, and the showerroom was about the same size as the bedroom. I did request a bath on booking, but was told no rooms were available with a bath when we arrived. Dinner was good, and was included in our room rate. Slight disappointment was with the wine choice - we picked a very nice bottle of wine, but couldn't order the same the next evening as they only had 1 bottle of each of the "special" wines. Overall a nice stay, not sure we'll be back though.

Thank you for your lovely comments, we do only have 4 bedrooms with baths, the rest have double showers. We do try to accomodate all guest requests but some times it is not possible. All confirmation letters or e mail confirmations state what facilities the rooms have.
We carry a large stock of house wines but not as many as the individaul bin numbers.
Hope to see you again.

Wife and I have just returned from our 3rd stay in this lovely hotel. The location is near the head of Great Langdale, excellent for those who are into fell walking, with such as Harrison Stickle, Pavey Ark, and Thunacar Knott literally outside the back door of the hotel. Another 15 minutes walking takes you onto the routes going towards Crinkle Crags, Bowfell and Esk Pike. If you don't want the high level treks, then the Langdale valleys are wonderful low level walks, with Blea Tarn and Elterwater very close by.

It was a shame the weather wasn't brilliant, but this ensured we made good use of the drying room every day for our walking gear! We stayed for five nights, in room 16, right at the top with a very nice view out towards Lingmoor Fell. As with previous visits the food was excellent, especially the breakfasts! The staff as always were very friendly and helpful, and did their utmost to ensure we had a relaxing stay. Very useful that they have a good WIFI, as mobile phone signals in the area are next to nothing, once you get onto the hills you can get a signal, but not in the hotel, which helps to make it even more peaceful!

Definitely not our last visit here!

Room Tip: Room 16, on the top floor, big bathroom, very quiet with gorgeous views to wake up to!
