Owner description: Lake Windermere ends around one mile short of Ambleside at Waterhead, and can come as a shock to boat passengers expecting to be in the town. But don't worry! There is an Electric Bus that take you into the centre of Ambleside. It is well worth the trip. The bus stops next to the world famous; Ambleside Sheepskins. If you decide to pop in to Ambleside Sheepskins, you might be lucky and bump into the odd celebrity or two shopping. Anything Sheepskin can be found in there 2 high street shops, boasting the best selection of sheepskin slippers, sheepskin rugs, cowhide rugs, reindeer skins in the UK. As well as the Local Herdwick Sheepskin rugs. They also offer to post your goods if you can not carry them back home with you. If you walk a further 300 yards up the road you will come across the best deli in the village, Stockghyll Fine Foods, takeaway pies, sandwiches & sweets - highly recommended! For walking and outdoor gear visit Cunninghams around the corner. Cunningham's was established in 1971 by Stewart Cunningham, an Ambleside lad who spent his early years on the fells in the Lake District. He opened the Ambleside store to meet the needs of the many walkers drawn to the Lakes. He has watched the technology evolve over the years from Ventile jackets and canvas rucksacks to the advent of Gore-tex and other fabric technologies. Cunningham's now has six stores across England, Scotland and Wales.

If you are staying in Ambleside, Waterhead is just a fifteen minute walk away down to the edge of Windemere. There are plenty of other forms of transport should walking not be your thing.
Once you get thee, the lake opens out in front in front of you. You'll see the piers where you can go out on the lake lake by various types of boat and the staff there are very helpful.
There's also a lovely pub with gardens that go right down to the water's edge where you can sip Pimms in the sunshine!

My husband and I always like to come here, just the two of us, as it is quite a special dinner - in my opinion anyway. We have always really enjoyed the food, like the interior, service very attentive. It was actually really warm (!) when we were last there, and we started off with a drink in the garden overlooking the Lake, and watching the sun set. Really beautiful!

We had been here before many times and it never fails! Great food and one of the best restaurant locations in the lakes!

Visited here with out two dogs. Got the walkers ticket and got the launch to Wray Castle and did the walk to the ferry house. Dogs enjoyed swimming in the lake at Waterhead.

Swimming in the lake is the stuff of true kids holidays. Great fun. Just remember to take wet shoes as its a bit stony . Walked up a massive hill as well with the kids and fantastic views from the top.
