Owner description: Lake Windermere ends around one mile short of Ambleside at Waterhead, and can come as a shock to boat passengers expecting to be in the town. But don't worry! There is an Electric Bus that take you into the centre of Ambleside. It is well worth the trip. The bus stops next to the world famous; Ambleside Sheepskins. If you decide to pop in to Ambleside Sheepskins, you might be lucky and bump into the odd celebrity or two shopping. Anything Sheepskin can be found in there 2 high street shops, boasting the best selection of sheepskin slippers, sheepskin rugs, cowhide rugs, reindeer skins in the UK. As well as the Local Herdwick Sheepskin rugs. They also offer to post your goods if you can not carry them back home with you. If you walk a further 300 yards up the road you will come across the best deli in the village, Stockghyll Fine Foods, takeaway pies, sandwiches & sweets - highly recommended! For walking and outdoor gear visit Cunninghams around the corner. Cunningham's was established in 1971 by Stewart Cunningham, an Ambleside lad who spent his early years on the fells in the Lake District.  He opened the Ambleside store to meet the needs of the many walkers drawn to the Lakes.  He has watched the technology evolve over the years from Ventile jackets and canvas rucksacks to the advent of Gore-tex and other fabric technologies. Cunningham's now has six stores across England, Scotland and Wales.

Ambleside is busy but beautiful and compact Lakeland town with lots to do and see and lots of good places to eat and drink. Try The Glasshouse!

“Excellent restaurant”
Reviewed January 13, 2012

We stayed at the hotel, and the staff here were very friendly. The bar and restaurant staff remembered our name, and used it each time the saw us.! A nice touch. The food was faultless and delicious. Only downside is, it is a little on the expensive side.

“Worth it for the breakfast alone!”
Reviewed November 28, 2011

We only stayed one night, and didn't get chance to experience dinner however the bedroom was a great size considering we had a toddler and a travel cot, very clean and modern. It's in a great location overlooking the lake and the breakfast was the best I have ever tasted !

“Great meal”
Reviewed November 12, 2011

Didnt stay but did eat there on Friday evening. Booked a table for 8, reasonably busy. Well laid out and decorated - good privacy at table, not crammed in. Had pidgeon breast to start, followed by fillet steak. Very good. Wife's meal was good too. Excellent, attentive and very fast service (especially the drinks).

“Angelic!”
Reviewed November 7, 2011

Me and my husband stayed in Ambleside for his birthday and boy was it worth every penny. Its the most beautiful place i've been too so far. We spent alot of time at the waterhead hotel and restaurant after a hard days hill walking and it was lucky for us warm enough to be able to sit in the gardens on the edge of the lake Windermere. The food was ok, had better but its worth going to sit and chill by the lake with a nice drink and conversation. The restaurant was extreamly busy all of the time so its obviously popular. Staff friendly and so is the local wildlife, would recomend it to anyone who wants to visit the lakes. Prices slightly high here but hey ho your on a holiday so why not treat yourself!
