Owner description: Lake Windermere ends around one mile short of Ambleside at Waterhead, and can come as a shock to boat passengers expecting to be in the town. But don't worry! There is an Electric Bus that take you into the centre of Ambleside. It is well worth the trip. The bus stops next to the world famous; Ambleside Sheepskins. If you decide to pop in to Ambleside Sheepskins, you might be lucky and bump into the odd celebrity or two shopping. Anything Sheepskin can be found in there 2 high street shops, boasting the best selection of sheepskin slippers, sheepskin rugs, cowhide rugs, reindeer skins in the UK. As well as the Local Herdwick Sheepskin rugs. They also offer to post your goods if you can not carry them back home with you. If you walk a further 300 yards up the road you will come across the best deli in the village, Stockghyll Fine Foods, takeaway pies, sandwiches & sweets - highly recommended! For walking and outdoor gear visit Cunninghams around the corner. Cunningham's was established in 1971 by Stewart Cunningham, an Ambleside lad who spent his early years on the fells in the Lake District. He opened the Ambleside store to meet the needs of the many walkers drawn to the Lakes. He has watched the technology evolve over the years from Ventile jackets and canvas rucksacks to the advent of Gore-tex and other fabric technologies. Cunningham's now has six stores across England, Scotland and Wales.

Me and my husband stayed in Ambleside for his birthday and boy was it worth every penny. Its the most beautiful place i've been too so far. We spent alot of time at the waterhead hotel and restaurant after a hard days hill walking and it was lucky for us warm enough to be able to sit in the gardens on the edge of the lake Windermere. The food was ok, had better but its worth going to sit and chill by the lake with a nice drink and conversation. The restaurant was extreamly busy all of the time so its obviously popular. Staff friendly and so is the local wildlife, would recomend it to anyone who wants to visit the lakes. Prices slightly high here but hey ho your on a holiday so why not treat yourself!

Ambleside is a lovely town and a 'must visit' place if you are staying in the Lake District.

It is a smallish town (so unspoilt) but big enough to have a decent coffee shop and a range of shops as well as a few more touristy attractions.

You can take a ferry trip across to Windemere from nearby Waterhead. If you park in Waterhead it is a 15 minute walk into Ambleside.

There is also a lovely little walk up to the waterfalls (entrance located behind the bank next to the Salutation Hotel) http://www.lake-district-guides.co.uk/walksvalley/walksvalley4a.html
