“A hidden Gem !”
Reviewed November 15, 2013

My partner and I went to the Rothay Manor for sunday lunch and were delighted with the food and the service. It may be viewed as old fashioned but the waiting staff were excellent and the food was good.Set in its own grounds on the outskirts of Ambleside but handy for Loughrigg we were impressed with the overall ambience of the place... so much so that I shall be booking a weekend break for us in a couple of weeks time. Well worth a visit !

Booked in for dinner with another couple the other night and delighted to report the quality, value and friendly ambiance remains the same as our previous visits.
Great menu with lots of choice, very reasonable wine list, lovely lounges and open fires, friendly and attentive staff...what more does one want?
Will be back...again...and again....

we have stayed here on a number of occasions and can say the staff are very helpful and friendly. The hotel is very relaxing. We stayed half board and the meals and choice could not have been better. Rooms are comfortable with excellent shower/bathrooms.

Booked for two nights. Check in was OK however we found carting luggage a bit difficult up the narrow stairs and around several corners. Our room was quite spacious with an out door balcony over looking a nice garden however 1.) the shower was not very good, 2.) the walls were quite this between the rooms, heard people on both sides moving in there rooms quite late in the evening, 3.) had to request another set of towels, only one set in a double room. We had dinner the first night in the hotel. Very traditional old world however a bit of the charm of the setting was taken off with the waiters and hosting staff being somewhat cold and very impersonal, just functional. The food was good though dinner was a bit pricey. However, the first morning a wonderful buffet style breakfast with hot order taken but on the second morning no buffet style that we so enjoyed the morning before. Reason given was not enough guests for breakfast thus only orders were taken. The experience was not in keeping with the service standard advertised and already received, not consistent.

We arrived at the hotel and received a very warm welcome and were shown to our room. We had booked a superior room which was very spacious and immaculately clean. The room overlooked the garden on the first floor with a small balcony too. However our shower was poor for a superior room.

We enjoyed a drink in one of the small lounges. The atmosphere is quiet and relaxing and guests staying were of different ages including 3 families.

The menu for evening meal offers a nice variety of dishes however we didn't enjoy the food as much as previous visits. The hotel certainly serve quality produce but too many dishes were served with 'mash' and also with a very limited selection of veg. Potato rosti was extremely salty. The chicken, guinea fowl, cod and lamb were lovely. The duck terrine was nice too but it needed a chutney or redcurrent jelly. The salmon tagliatele much too creamy. Apple tarte tatin and the raspberry and coconut dessert were very pleasant. Breakfasts were beautifully cooked. We understand that the restaurant is to be refurbished which will make the hotel feel more up to date. Some background music would improve the atmosphere.

Staff were very friendly in all areas. We were surprised however that the housekeeper knocked on our door to clean our room before we had been for breakfast. She was obviously eager to clean the rooms early.

The hotel is nicely situated. Short walk to Ambleside and also to Ambleside Pier. No traffic noise.

We had a pleasant stay but left with mixed feelings especially considering the price we had paid.

If in the Lake District try not to miss a lunch at the Rothay Manor in Ambleside. Other reviews have described it as 'dated' but I would say it conjures up elegant tradition which is both sophisticated and relaxing in today's frantic fast food climate. We were shown to our table for lunch having selected our choice from simple soup and sandwiches, a lighter bite selection and a three course challenging menu. We opted for the latter and both presentation and the quality of the food and its cooking were impeccable. Also excellent value for money. Surroundings and décor were tasteful and comfortable and you would not have been surprised if Miss Marple had been observed at a nearby table! Really recommended.

Room Tip: Did not stay but was assured by another gust that the rooms were splendid.
