“Lovely place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 18, 2012 via mobile

In every way the people at Rothay Manor go out of their way to make the hotel warm, friendly, immaculately presented and with an excellent restaurant. Well positioned 5 mins walk from the lovely town of Ambleside and the north shore of stunning Lake Windermere.

Afternoon tea was just the best. Super sandwiches, tasty little canape type things, Cumberland sausage and sweet stuff too (which doesn't interest me so much). The setting is a classy but classic hotel, comfy sofas and the papers to peruse. The service was attentive (almost but, but not quite to the point of being intrusive).
A typically English experience which I would put on a par with breakfast in Fortnums and Masons. Both heartily recommended.

I stayed with my Wife in the Wansfell suite in the hotel grounds. The suites are worth the extra i mwould say with their own parking for easy un/loading. Its self contained with a seperate sitting room which is most welcome after a hard days hiking (tea, fridge and biscuits provided as well fluffy bathrobes). The location is 5 minutes walk into Ambleside if you want to visit a restaurant or pub (there are a few good ones). Also you can walk straight out the hotel into a number of well known fell walks......so location is great and peaceful. Now onto the breakfasts......Oh My word, if you are a big english breakfast fan you are not going to be disapointed here. The staff, service and quality is just fantastic. We stayed three nights so sampled the Full English, Salmon and scrambled eggs and also the smoked kippers.....fantastic and well fueled for a good days hiking! can't think of a downside to this hotel apart from the other residents tend to be in their senior years, but really the pubs/ambleside are just up the road to give you a little life!. Don't let that put you off though, it really is good.

Room Tip: The Wansfell Suite

We were looking for a family friendly hotel for a short stay in the Lakes and Rothay Manor was a great choice. We took our own travelcot but they also provide them, with plenty of space in the rooms for all that goes with travelling with a baby! Lots of variety on offer at breakfast, although strangely we only ever got one person worth of toast despite asking clearly for two portions. Coffee refills were never offered. All in all, a good choice for a comfortable stay in the Lakes.

I'm sorry the last reviewer was disappointed - we had a different experience. The host - Cornelious - is a master at being welcoming and accomodating. He has a lovely manner and nothing is too much trouble for him. He seems to take pride in what he does and wants guests to enjoy their visit. I have a fish allergy - and they managed this really well. I wasn't sure about it being buffet style as I tend to enjoy silver service afternoon tea, complete with cake stands. However, as long as you know this is what it is it works well. Actually, being able to make your own choice and have as much or as lilttle as you like is good. There was a good variety of sandwiches. There were a number of different cakes - the choice is wider than the usual afternoon teas I have enjoyed elsewhere. Everything is home made, including the jam and lemon curd - both of which were delicious. Good selection of teas - I tried one, wasn't sure about it and it was changed without any fuss. The lounges are quiet and you do sit on sofas - but again this was okay - and we got talking to a lovely couple next to us which made for a friendly atmosphere. Overall we enjoyed the tea and Cornelious is an asset to the hotel. We intend to return.

I can't recommend Rothay Manor highly enough! Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, whether it was a last minute travel cot or adding an extra guest at the last minute. The rooms were spacious and well appointed. Overall, we had a lovely stay!

I'd been given a voucher from a friend and had booked a good few weeks ago.

When we arrived in the hotel it was desolate, not a soul inside- no one on reception or on the bar. So we chose to sit down on a sofa in the bar area and chat and wait. I must say the decor was lovely, really beautiful throughout.

No one came out for up to 40minutes! OK, we had arrived about 30 mins early but had planned to perhaps freshen up etc first.

When the staff member did come out, they ignored us and went straight to an elderly couple who appeared to be "regulars" and took their orders! Not even acknowledging us.....

We didn't feel we were made welcome or at ease.

My main complaints were- you sit in a bar area with no background music and 3 other couples, it's AKWARD. Everyone can hear every word you are talking about. No thought had been put to the "afternoon tea venue". Plus I didn't like that we were sat on sofas hunched over a coffee table!! To me, that's not what afternoon tea is about.

The sandwiches were poor, soggy and covered in saggy cling film which you had to lift every time you wanted any. The presentation of the "buffet" was also poor, and the selection poor.

Would have been very disappointed had I paid full price!

Dear Butterflygirl, thank you for taking the time to review your afternoon tea here at Rothay Manor Hotel. I am sorry you did not feel our Afternoon Tea and the service provided did not meet your expectations, as you can see from many of our other reviews it is generally well regarded both in terms on content and the service provided.
The majority our of guests do tend to announce their arrival either at reception or the bar, whilst i appreciate that at the time of your arrival the staff members on duty may have been busy, but a bell is provided at both locations to call for assistance.
We aim to provide a quiet, friendly atmosphere for all our guests, whilst background music is something we have often considered, we fine the majority of our guests enjoy the tranquility and quiet of our lounges, and find the sofas and coffee tables provide a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy afternoon tea.
I note you comment that the buffet selection is poor - we provide 4 different sandwich types, 4 savoury items, 5 different cream items, and 5 different cakes on a daily basis plus scones, I question as to whether this really is a poor selection, I would like to fine an Afternoon Tea venue that truely offers a greater choice.
I also note you rated the quality of our bedrooms and sleep quality as poor. - did you take a nap during you visit?
