“Fantastic find”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 2, 2013

We recently stayed at Riverside Hotel in Ambleside for three nights and we cannot fault anything during our stay. David and Brenda were the perfect hosts, nothing was too much trouble and they were happy to provide information on the area and recommended the best local restaurants. We would recommend eating at Dodds but be prepared for a short wait for a table as they do not take bookings, but well worth the wait. The hotel is in a quiet location of Ambleside and torches were provided for the dark autumn evenings. On return to the hotel at night David and Brenda had thoughtfully lit candles on the steps up to the hotel. The hotel was spotlessly clean with well-furnished and comfortable rooms with ample teas, coffees, hot chocolate, bottled water and biscuits provided. Also provided in the bathroom were locally made shampoo, conditioner and shower gels. The home cooked breakfast was fantastic using locally sourced products served each day by David. Top marks for Brenda’s home-made bread (different kind each day), home-made potato cakes and smoothies. We will definitely recommend this hotel to friends and family and will definitely return again early in 2014.

Room Tip: Room one very comfortable with a seating area for relaxing

Our annual jaunt to Ambleside with friends from our camera club never fails to disappoint. Our stay at The Riverside is always first class. The rooms are superbly furnished and supplied with everything you need and the lounge has numerous books, maps and guides to help you decide on where to go and how to get there. Breakfast is cooked to perfection and there is always plenty of choice. David and Brenda are wonderful hosts and take on board every comment, even down to having replaced a rug in the lounge which kept ruffling up. Food and products used in the hotel are sourced from or made by local businesses and are always excellent. You will not find a more perfect place than this for your stay in Ambleside.

Room Tip: All rooms are excellent with lovely outlooks, but if you want that little bit of extra luxury ask fo...

I would recommend Riverside to anyone who is traveling in the Lake District. David and Brenda Milne have a beautiful home-away-from-home. Somehow they have managed to think of every detail important to travelers. Their location is beautiful, a short walk from town. Our room was spotless and had everything we needed. Brenda's remarkable breakfasts were served by David in a lovely dining area. We enjoyed freshly made breads, local jams and jellies, and fresh fruit and juices every day. Their "English breakfasts" were delicious with the eggs cooked to order. We hiked one day with a guide from Lake District Walkers, a company recommended by David. At Zeffirellis in Ambleside we had the best dinner of the week. David and Brenda are to be commended for their warm hospitality. We would love to return to Riverside.

This was our second visit to the Riverside in 4 months, which says it all. The warm and friendly welcome we received from Dave and Brenda made it feel like a home from home. We cannot fault our time here, and would not hesitate to stay again. The home cooked English breakfast sourced with local ingredients was delicious, as was the selection of home-baked breads and preserves.

Ample on site parking is a bonus, and Ambleside is only a ten minute stroll away.

Highly recommended. Can't wait to go back.

My wife and I chose to stay here while we spent a few days exploring the Lake District. We have no complaints whatsoever. Dave and Brenda were fantastic from our early enquiries, through booking and during our stay. The location was great, and the room clean, neat and tidy. The breakfast was absolutely fantastic. We would recommend this to any couple staying in the area.

Fully lives up to its stellar reputation. We stayed 3 nights in room 2. The location is ideal, perfectly quiet if not for the sounds of the stream, 10 minutes walk to town center for dining and easy access to trails. Our hosts, accommodations and food were perfect.
Thank you Dave and Brenda

Just back from a wonderful 3 night stay at Riverside, our first visit there but certainly not our last. The whole package of customer service and comfort provided by the team at Riverside is right up there with the best, and they fully deserve all the great reviews they get. From the moment we arrived until we left we treated to tremendous hospitality from Dave and Brenda. In fact, when we even got an email after our trip asking if we had a nice journey home. Not a single criticism from us, and we've stayed in many places in UK and abroad over the last 30 years. Too many nice things to say, but the location of the hotel is perfect, looking over the small river. I thought the noise would bother me, but we even ended up opening the window when we woke to hear the peaceful noise!!!.
This was undoubtedly the cleanest place we have stayed, it was immaculate - well done to the cleaning staff, your hard work was certainly noticed.
On top of the location of the hotel and comfort provided, I think what singles this place out is the wonderful friendly hospitality provided by Dave and Brenda - it really did feel like a home from home. We only had rough plans of what to do each day, but Dave is great at understanding what might suit you best. He couldn't help enough to be honest, and we got a great combination of several boat trips on Windermere and 2hr walk after a good chat with him - thanks Dave, that day was the tops for us.
Last by no means least, I have to highly commend the breakfast. The full english breakfast was amazing, not just tasty and substantial, but also as well presented as I think I have ever seen - many thanks for that Brenda:-)
I will certainly be recommending Riverside to friends and family, and will surely be back again - we had a memorable 3 days in the Lake District
