“Better even than its reputation”

We were a walking party of six that booked into the ODG. Our previous experience of the ODG had been in the Walkers' Bar which is noisy, sometimes unpleasant and does not trust its customers with glass! As a resident the experience is totally different. The welcoming lady on reception (Sue?) helped with a host of minor external issues we faced on arrival. The wonderful Eva, our server in the restaurant, made a good meal even better and the residents' lounge must be one of the best places to meet fellow walkers in the whole of the Lakes. Just one thing stops me giving 5 stars to the ODG. I'm afraid the bar service in the residents' bar was poor and was made to seem poorer still by a barman who insisted on reminding anyone who wanted a drink that he had a queue of people waiting in the Walkers' Bar. That's not his fault and, maybe, the management need to think about increasing staffing, but he could have handled the situation without being so short with a group of people who were spending a lot more than the smaller number of folk in the other bar.

Stayed here whilst on a midweek walking break that was postponed from March because of deep snow. 11 men of various ages and walking ability on a dinner bed and breakfast deal for 2 nights. Let's get to the main points.
1. Nobody said this is luxury accommodation. It's functional, clean and is in fact a pub with rooms.
2. So, not all rooms are en suite but you know that when you book and all bathrooms are near to the rooms.
3. The staff are in fact all very nice especially if you speak to them as human beings.
4. The food is generally very good pub grub with large portions. Unless you are a trencherman then 2 courses are enough. Of equal importance for one of our guys was the fact that nearly all on offer is gluten free so coeliacs have little to worry about. Breakfast is a particularly good experience when a day on the hills is on the agenda.
5. No TV or mobile connection! Great news for us. At least you rediscover the art of conversation and the playing of quiz games in a delightful residents lounge over coffee and drinks. There is free wifi and if it's raining they have a pass for a fitness gym down at nearby Chapel Stile.

So in conclusion ask yourself why you are in the Great Langdale area. If it's walking or cycling or anything else not involving arriving in pristine condition then this is a good option with refreshment of a more than acceptable standard.

Room Tip: Room 8 is huge but not en suite. Rooms 9,10 and 11 are all good options.

This is a very special place. Not only because the rooms are nice, the food is excellent and the hosts most friendly. Not to mention that the langdale area is beautiful.
No, in addition to all this, it is great to be in a place without internet, without mobiles working, no TVs and no radios. Just nice and quiet. And people talk to each other.
Highly recommended. We have come all the way from Norway twice (where we have enough mountains !), and we will be back.

my partner has good memories of this place camping here with his kids, so we dutifully walked here from skelwith fold. lovely day, fantastic views, heaving with walkers and a convenient bus back to our site at 19.00.
lots of tiny birds stealing crisps etc.from your table
partner said the beer is good and they are relaxed about all dogs.
but it is very run down and not so clean inside - so take it at face value and just drop in for a drink or two. local taxies seem to run there quite often as well as the bus.

First off, the hotel. We had rooms 9 and 10. All of us thought the rooms were good. In fact I think we were surprised at how nice they were. Nice bathrooms. Good showers. Awesome views of the fells. The top of the canopy of the 4 poster bed in Room 10 could do with a bit of a clean though.

We met many regular patrons of the hotel and they were very interesting and entertaining.

Enjoyed a bar meal and a few games of cards in the Residents Lounge. Loved the small little spot with a few tables and shiny red buzzer for bar service. Like a refuge in the wilderness.

When we first arrived we went into the Hikers Bar. We had been told several times along the Wainwright Memorial Walk that this was an epic bar. Granted it is excellent to go into dripping wet and not worry about getting told off for mudding up the floor but I would be lying if I didn't say that I was a bit let down at first glance. We went back outside and had our after hiking beers at the picnic tables unders a large umbrella to shield us from the rain. Later in the evening, after we'd had dinner, we went back and the bar was heaving due to a wake for a regular guest (or something along this line). Loads of folks playing instruments, singing and having a good old time. I could now understand why this bar had a good reputation.

The bathrooms off the bar deserve special mention. They are, nearly, the smelliest bathrooms I have ever been in. I am sure ones I've into in Southeast Asia or India have been worse but I can't recall. They absolutely reek of urine. Nearly gagged. Honestly, a bit of attention in this area would not go amiss.

All in all we enjoyed the location of the hotel, the history of it, the rooms and the atmosphere but a little bit of TLC is needed.

What has happened to the standard of the food here? Had several meals over the last weekend at the festival but it wasnt good. Soup was bland and fish and chips was worst Ive ever had. Basically a plate of batter with holes in where the fish should have been. Game pie full of carrots and no obvious sign of game. Come on - you can do better than this. Prices are higher than average as its the lakes but it needs to be matched by good food. This is such a great venue so please put some effort into sorting this as we want to come back.

Stayed here at the end of August 2013, with family and dog. What a location. Situated at the end of the Langdale valley. Great views, and lovely hikes and drives. A real old Lakeland hotel, geared for hikers and very dog friendly. Good food and an impressive array of local brews. Friendly service.
