Tucked down a side alley in Ambleside this little cafe is a treasure. It is cramped, the ceilings are low but the food is homemade, wholesome, vegetarian and wonderful. £4 for a large bowl of soup with cheese and a large doorstep of bread. It has some outside seating for those dry days. The staff were frantically busy when we visited in April but still friendly and welcoming.

We have only recently discovered this little hidden gem after many years of visiting Ambleside but we are already hooked!! The veggie chilli is absolutely to die for and comes in a huge bowl with creme fraiche and a chunk of delicious bread. Another favourite is the roasted vegetable and brie sandwich. This is no ordinary sandwich this is a Rattle Gill sandwich. It consists of doorstep size slices of bread and is packed full and comes with homemade chutney, a lovely salad and pasta etc. all beautifully presented. The smoothies also deserve a mention, they are delicious and like a meal in a glass. Some people might think the food is a tad expensive but you get what you pay for and the food is certainly worth every penny. The cafe is tucked away but is certainly worth finding. All in all we cannot fault the Rattle Gill and we are not even vegetarians!!
