“It was so enjoyable, we've just booked in again for April!!”
Reviewed February 20, 2013

Though we are regular visitors to the Lake District this was our first stay at The Salutation at Ambleside. What a wonderful experience!! The reception staff were extremely helpfull and the service was excellent. The breakfast is worth booking in for and there is plenty of selection to suit every palate. A relaxing soak in the outdoor hot tub is a must after a day romping round the fells. We used the swimming pool, steam room and jacuzzi, and the following morning we even had a pre-breakfast work-out in the gym! No visit to the Salutation would be complete without an indulgent treatment at Oxley's Blue Fish Spa. The facial and full body massage are just wonderful!! Would recommend this hotel to anyone!!

Delighted with all your comments and pleased to hear you have booked to visit agian in April. Thank you for the kind comments about our staff we have a great team and I agree the hot tub is a must after a hard day on the fells. Oxley's is a fantastic asset to the hotel and the treatments are fabulous - although I have yet to try a facial myself! We have worked really hard on our breakfast so i'm glad you enjoyed it, I look forward to welcoming you back in April.

We had looked at staying here on previous trips to the Lakes, but could never get a single night - you had to book two or more - this time we did. It has a perfect position at the top of the town, and we parked easily around the back. We got in early too, but our room was quite small, barely enough room to walk at the bottom of the bed. Maybe we were unlucky with our room, maybe its because of its central location, but it felt cramped. The bed and pillows were a little firm for us, and the bed quite small again, but eveythign else about the room was fine. There are some other odd quirks - the lift is made of glass, no problem, but while we were there at least, every hallway was full of old furniture, making the wide hallways quite narrow. Very strange.

However, the gym was excellent, especially the outdoor Canadian hot tub, where you can listen to the river running past. And breakfast was amazing, even for the standard generally foudn in the Lakes.

So overall, very good, excellent in parts, but our single night cost £132 ! I think the hotel was full, in February as well, so people must pay it, but this is just too much. How can they justify this when the rooms are cramped ? What else are we paying for ? Lots of staff certainly, but little else to justify a top rating.

Room Tip: We had room 219 and it was tiny. I hear the club rooms are better, but of course they are even more.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review and for your kind comments about our location, breakfast and lesuire facilities and that you found your overall stay with us good and excellent in parts. All our classic rooms of which 219 is have king sized bed and I am sorry you found the room to be cramped, I have noted your coment about the pillows asnd we have just invested in new pillows (as well as new beds our Club rooms have now super king beds and our single rooms have a strandard double bed) so we can offer our guest's the option of firm or soft pillows.I'm pleased you found our lift a little quirky, as it runs up the main stair well which has limited space (you should have seen us getting it in!) we thought a glass option would make it look more open.We do have fuirnature on the corridors for decoration during your stay we did have a little more as one of our rooms was undergoing some refurbishments, apologies for any inconveince this may have caused. With regards to our rates for a one night Saturday stay in Feburay (a very busy month for the Lakes) I think our rates are in line with other hotels in the area, when you look at the facilities we have to offer lounges, bar, lesuire car park. Our Club rooms are bigger and many with balconys they do have a supplement charge but they have super king beds, bottled water, bathrobes, slippers and are very popular with our guest's.Your feedback is important to us and I would like to thank you once again and hope that we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back to stay with us in the future.

Our first time at this hotel we had one night 14/02/2013. The decor and furnishings are good with very high standards of cleanliness in our room and public areas. We had a standard room which was a bit cramped on one side which could be resolved with a little furniture moves. Evening meal was very good although some items of the cooked breakfast were cold despite very hot plates. Service at reception was very good and the restaurant good and polite. The low spot was the bar service. We had to wait a long time for a drink whilst the lady on duty prepared hot drinks for other guests, but she did not make any attempt to explain the delay, thank us for waiting or offer an appology. Her sevice was indifferent and void of any attempt to offer any acceptable level of customer service. As a valentine's night surprise my wife ordered from the bar a small bottle of cava and asked for it to be brought to our dinner table for only me and she explained that it was for one person as she does not drink cava, what we got was 2 glasses just put on our table by one of the restaurant waiters, it spoiled the surprise. We will stay here again but will expect good to great service in all areas.

This must be about my 10th trip or more to The Salutation and I still have been unable to find anything to fault it for. Great rooms, great staff, perfect location, brilliant pool saunas gym etc for a lakes hotel and what an incredible breakfast ....

Thanks to all the staff here that make it a pleasure to visit

Have just arrived back after yet another fabulous short break. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. The club rooms are a real treat. Breakfast is a daily adventure - there is so much choice! Eating in is good value too. The location is ideal - there are lots of walks that can be started at the front door, and plenty of shopping too.

We've stayed here so often, that it feels as if we know everyone who works there, and they all so friendly and helpful. The breakfast is one of the best we've ever had, and the club rooms are especially good. The only reservation I ever have is the price - there are a lot of very nice hotels in the Ambleside area now and many of them are much cheaper than the Salutation, so a slight rethink of prices may be a good idea, to make sure they don't price themselves out of the market! But it is a lovely place to stay.

We have just returned from another fantastic stay at the Salutation, this time we chose to stay here to celebrate my husband's "special" birthday with family and friends.
This hotel has always been wonderful in our opinion, the public rooms are beautifully furnished, cosy and warm. The bedrooms, whilst varied in size, are immaculately clean and comfortable. The breakfast is simply unbeatable, lunches are freshly prepared and dinner either in the bistro or in the restaurant is excellent. The pool area is a great place to relax and the "Sally" ducks are now even cuter in their blue colour!!
I feel I must use this review to once again praise the OUTSTANDING staff at the Salutation, we have always known that they will go "the extra mile" to give friendly, helpful service and this time, more than ever, from my initial enquiry onwards, nothing was too much trouble for the staff to undertake to make this a memorable occasion for my husband, our family and friends. Many thanks for the effort taken on this occasion to cater for special dietary requirements.
We were also able to have a look round the new Helvellyn Suite.....wow it doesn't get much more luxurious than this!!
If you are looking for a special hotel to stay at in Ambleside, where providing comfort, good food and a friendly atmosphere are the number one priorities of all the staff, you need look no further than The Salutation.
Take my advice, join the Westmorland Club to get the best deals, once you have experienced all that the Salutation has to offer, you will want to return again and again.
Finally it is nice to stay at a hotel where "senior management" are happy and willing to undertake any role ("Thanks Paul" for cleaning up after our slight mishap with the sofa and the table/coffee/tea tray!!!)

Room Tip: Rooms do vary in size. Club rooms are larger and have a seating area. Room 207 is a good example of...
