“Cheap & Cheerful Enough”
Reviewed September 17, 2013

Having decided to visit the Lakes for an impromptu walking trip, we trawled the internet and came up with the Churchill at £70 for B&B in a double room, which certainly undercut local rivals. This is no cosy country inn, but a town centre pub focusing on TV sport, with about 16 guest rooms. On the plus side, everything in Ambleside is in easy walking distance, some free parking is available (although it's accessed via a VERY narrow alley, so leave the Hummer at home...) and breakfast was decent enough. Our room was reasonably spacious and comfortable, with TV, tea/coffee making kit and a fair-sized ensuite. Be advised though, that there's no lift, and it can feel like a good yomp up to the top floor after a day's fellwalking! In summary, the Churchill offers good basic and handily located accommodation at a reasonable price, and needs to be viewed in that light.

Room Tip: Whilst the top floor ('Helvellyn') is far enough away from the bar not to suffer from any no...

We stayed here for a week at the beginning of September and for £230 each (including breakfast) it was very reasonably priced. The rooms were kept clean and were a good size with an ok sized bathroom. Breakfast was well prepared and set us up nicely for long walks.
Two issues with this inn are that although it is advertised that there is wifi in all the rooms we couldn't get on it from where we were on the top floor. Also, they don't lie when they say the road to the car park is tight and steep but our complaint is that they do not mention the lack of spaces and that over night we had to drive around a bit to find a free car parking space because we didn't want to pay to stay in the pay and display down the road (which is quite a way down the road).
If you want a country inn this is not the place for you, as advertised it is a sports bar, which we didn't mind (being students). There are no lifts so if you're on the top floor this can be annoying but again, we knew this before we went so we didn't mind.
This pub is very central to ambleside and is very good value but really read the information about it before you commit.
Thank you for a pleasant stay.

Decided to stay over last minute and this place was recommended to us by locals as it had been recently refurbished.

Rooms were offered to us at a rate of £89 per night with breakfast. The gentleman behind the bar showed me two rooms and I opted for one without a view as it was only for one night! Rooms were clean and tidy, bed was comfy and it served a purpose. There was a kettle, tea/coffee, biscuits and mints available along with soap etc in the bathroom.

The B&B was located just on the main street, which was great and had parking, albeit a little tight for some, round the back but we didnt struggle. It had a late night bar underneath but we didn't use it, although we had been playing pool and the bar manager/owner shouted something from behind the bar and when I asked what he'd said, as we were the only ones in the bar and almost finished, one of the bar tenders said, oh it doesn't matter, just ignore him but it did make us feel a uncomfortable.

Breakfast was served between 8:30-9:30, which didn't give us much chance, however, this is becasue the pub opens at 10:00. A few options of breakfast were offered, which we chose full english. We didn't get the hash browns nor did we get to choose how we wanted the eggs cooking - they came fried, which was fine and we enjoyed them, so that's all that matters.

All in all, not bad for a last minute booking.

We arrived at the hotel on foot as we did not see the car park entrance and parked down the road. When we went in to ask where the car park was we were shown the entrance in person by a friendly young man. The car park entrance is very tight but in centre of busy Lakes town it was good to have one, thankfully we were in a small car. After moving our car into the hotel car park the young man kindly offered to carry our bags up to the room for us. The room and en-suite were clean and we had a pleasant outlook onto the main street. The staff were friendly and the breakfasts good and overall we thought it was reasonable value for the Lakes although we had expected a far more cosy decor in the bar and better choice in the bar meals menu, both of which are fairly basic. However, the real fly in the ointment for us which would stop us staying again was that you had to enter through the bar which was the main entrance and there were several large TV sets right around the open plan bar/lounge walls and blasting football out each on of the 3 nights we stayed there till about 10pm and combined with the cheers of all the people watching was rather annoying as the noise carried up to the 3rd floor where we were staying. Relaxing ambience rating for a country inn was zero. When we mentioned this in a local restaurant we were told it was definitely far more of a sports bar for locals rather than a cosy country inn for tourists.

We were booked in for one night, Sunday 11th August 2013. Arrived to find the entrance to the car park was narrow, though I managed to get in easily! The first impression as we walked in the door wasn't good to be honest. It just wasn't "inviting". The floor was all laminate flooring, and the seats/tables were of a modern type, which sorta didn't "fit in". Like dave f's review, I would agree it is a sports bar, and because of this, we ate elsewhere for our evening meal. The staff were friendly enough, and the rooms we had were very nice, clean and comfortable. The breakfast was very good, choices of cereal, juices, etc and the cooked breakfast was lovely.

Room Tip: Get one on the top floor, away from the noise from the bar's TV's.....usually sports!

Overall a good central position in Ambleside. Room was very good. But the parking was bad none of the staff had a clue how to organise it. Very tight even for a small car. Pub is a sports bar not quiet country inn.

My husband and I stayed for one night on 3 August 2013. On the plus side the room was clean and the cooked breakfast was good. Apart from that there's not really much else positive that can be said. I have no idea how this is rated as 4*. The rooms are very tired. The entrance via the bar is ugly. We were on the first floor and the noise from the bar was so loud we couldn't sleep. I've stayed in much nicer b&bs for the same price so I won't be booking here again.
