Ah, what a unique place! I'm afraid the service was a little, em, dippy, with a lovely girl who just didn't know what she was doing handing food to customers then taking it away again because it was for someone else. We got the impression it's a bit of a lifestyle place –– most of the staff seemed to be of a similar disposition, wispy, ethereal and not really up to functional chores. Having said that, it's friendly, warm and the food (when you get it) is great. If you're prepared for the unique atmosphere I think you'll find it as much fun as we did. We went back, and we'll go again.

“Respite on a rainy sunday”
Reviewed September 16, 2013

After de-camping in the Langdales in atrocious conditions we arrived in Ambleside wet, miserable and looking for breakfast. Found Bilbo's after trying a number of our usuals and finding them closed. A big breakfast ordered and we were all asked whether we wanted our tea of coffee medium or strong-that is def a first at breakfast. (As was the Rolling Stones on the stereo)

The food arrived after a little wait and was as described-what I will say is that if you are going to serve a "big breakfast" on a large plate try and make the plate look full-an extra scoop of beans or mushrooms (or preferably both) isn't going to break the bank. A large plate with wide open spaces between the food does not look quite such value for money as a well stacked small plate-Picky I know but all four hungry lads in the party made the same observation!!!

The cumberland was good, the bacon slightly underdone (that's my preference-but not everybody's) the eggs ok though one was still snotty (think that's the technical term but I'm not on masterchef!!!) but the hash brown not good.

If trip advisor works and service providers take notice of the comments then we might give it another try in a few months and hope its improved.

“Just brilliant !!!!!”
Reviewed September 5, 2013 via mobile

Great food, generous portions , excellent staff and dog friendly

This is the perfect and best cafe in Ambleside by far .

It became our second home when on holiday for 2 weeks.

The breakfast are superb and all freshly cooked . Seating is varied with comfy sofas in a great window setting .

The cakes change daily and are made on site - chocolate brownie is the best !!!!

The staff are relaxed and friendly

Highly recommended
