Description: The newly refurbished Spice of Bengal is a family run Indian restaurant and takeaway providing exciting and exotic fine Indian cuisine in the heart of scenic Ambleside. In 1986 our late father opened the Passage of India in Keswick, one of the first Indian restaurants in the lake district. A decade later we opened the Spice of Bengal in 1994 and we have continued his commitment to quality cuisine based on our Bangladeshi heritage and giving outstanding customer service. All dishes are prepared with the utmost care in the Spice of Bengal kitchen, using only the finest fresh ingredients and our own special combination of spices. Just like our dishes, our newly refurbished restaurant fuses traditional with modern surroundings, giving a spacious, friendly dining environment.

Ate here last weekend. To be honest the food was very good and we really enjoyed our mains but waited so long to be given menus and to have our drinks order taken I was on the verge of walking out and it wasn't that busy, as we were in quite early. A smile from the staff might help too!
would I go again? yes but not if it was a busy period

Waited 20mins to be asked if we wanted drinks. It then took them another 20mins to bring the drinks. Ordered 1 starter to share which took nearly 30mins and when it came it was cold. Mains took even longer. Wouldnt mind but they werent even that busy. The food wasnt great considering the £50 bill. And while we were eating other customers cancelled there food and left as it was taking so long. Wouldnt recommend this place at all!!!!!!

It was OK, we've had better but when there is little to choose from at 10:30, you have to make do. Popadoms were fresh, which is always a good sign.

Had a very good Indian meal twice at the Spice of Bengal recently with friends. The tandoori duck was really delicious and the curries were really good.

What has happened at the Spice of Bengal? We have eaten here for the past four years but thought we would have a takeaway this year on the way back from a day's walking. All three dishes were terrible: they lacked any spicy flavour, the chicken tikka masala was watery, the mixed vegetable curry was bland and even the papadoms lacked crunch. The only bright thing was the colour - post box red is the best description. The chef must have run out of all his spices and he certainly didn't check any of the flavours otherwise he would have noticed. Very disappointing!
