“A real home-from-home”
Reviewed January 5, 2014

"Make yourselves at home" is an all too common phrase but from the moment we arrived it was clear that in the case of Holmeshead Farm, Judith and Edward meant exactly what they said. From the fridge with fresh milk instead of the usual UHT packets, to the cosy lounge and "last one in turn the lights off" attitude everything about Holmeshead Farm seems designed to make you feel instantly at home.

The en suite double room was comfortable, spotlessly clean and had everything you'd normally find in a good quality hotel (including wifi & biscuits!), with the added benefit of glorious views across the open countryside to the Drunken Duck pub (a must if you're a fan of beer, good food or good company). The full English breakfast is substantial, backed up by cereals & fresh fruit for those of a healthier disposition. In summary we're left wondering why we've bothered with all those B&Bs in Ambleside over the years when a gem like this was so close by.

Note: If you're lucky enough to stay over New Year as we were then the Drunken Duck has a great firework display on NYE that can be seen from the farm if you prefer to stay in the warm, together with mulled wine and bacon butties on NYD morning.

With Ambleside booked out, we chose to stay 3 nights in this cosy and inviting Farm stay. A peaceful and attractive area of the Lake District with unspoilt rural views.
Parts of the farm house are 300 years old and we loved the creaking and uneven floorboards that provide a genuine old world atmosphere - and a nice warmth.
Our room with ensuite bathroom was spotlessly clean and met all our requirements, except for the WiFi that we could not connect with.
This is a working farm and the approach and parking are at the rear which means the new guest does not immediately become aware of the more attractive house frontage.
A yummy and substantial cooked breakfast provided by the friendly host(s).
Cost 40Pounds pp per night.
Nearby pubs we can recommend are the Drunken Duck and the less expensive Outgate.
NOTE: Holmeshead is less than 15 minutes from Ambleside but can be difficult to find because of the narrow forested roads and inadequate signage. Even with Satnav we had some difficulties

My partner and I stayed in sept 2013 just for 2 nights and found the room cosy with good views. Lovely hosts. It's quiet and just off the beaten track enough to give a flavour of the timelessness that the lake district evokes. Holmeshead farm has the right mix. Big garden with great views on a nice day and we happened upon wild deer around at night.

Room Tip: Splendid family room for our next visit with our toddler.

A location so beautiful you could be starring in a Cumbria tourist video, the warm welcome from Judith and her husband to the warm, a lovely comfy living room where the top notch breakfast cooked to order in the morning, makes this a perfect stop from which to explore the Lakes. We visited for walking/sight-seeing but also to stumble back from the Drunken Duck which could be seen from our bedroom window. If staying in the area, the Duck is a must if you like food and beer, although a little more expensive than some places. Note that breakfast serving time at Holmeshead is a 15 minute window, so you need military efficiency to be up in time!

I'll keep this short...

Clean, neat and very traditional little farmhouse. Stunning scenery, delicious breakfast and friendly owners.

Would recommend and come again for sure.

One tip if you're planning on staying at Holmeshead - take a sat nav, especially if you're driving in the dark. It's amazing how similar windy country roads look in the pitch black!

We had a fabulous stay at Holmeshead Farm. Arriving late on a dark afternoon, we were greeted by Judy with a warm cup of tea and some yummies. We settled in and Judy directed us to a lovely restaurant for dinner. We stayed two nights and felt very at home here. If/when we return to the Lake District, I would definitely choose to return here. We loved the rural views and the comfortable and cozy atmosphere, which was pristine. The only problem we had was in finding the place -- those country roads are a bit confusing!

We stayed at the farm on the saturday evening and got there late saturday afternoon. Its a bit out of the way but very cosy, friendly and more importantly clean. Most of the B & B's that we found say that they are dog friendly but dont let you keep your dog in your room but this one does and the owner doesn't have a problem with that just as long as you make sure they are clean.
Also with it been off the beaten track you wont have a problem taking your dog for a walk in the local woods as there is no traffic, but make sure you take a torch for the evening walk.
