We have just returned from a long weekend at the lakes. We went into Ambleside to have food and a few beers, the pub we first went into finished food at 5 o'clock and recommended the Unicorn Inn for good food. When we arrived the pub was what you would expect snug and cosy. The 1 young lad behind the bar were really lovely and helpful, We had a few beers then ordered food. when the food came 3 dishes out of the 4 was fine, actually really nice but a friend of ours ordered The Mixed Grill....... the meat was so tuff it was hard to work out what it was he was eating, so after trying a bit of each and could not chew any of it he decided to speak to a member of staff to say he's meal wasn't nice....The young blonde headed girl said she would go and speak to the chef but after about 10 minutes she still didn't come back at which point our friend decided he wasn't going to eat his meal, so he ended up calling the young girl over to see what the chef had said, well before she could reply a dark headed girl came over, very bolshey she told the young blonde girl she will deal with it. our friend went on to say his meat was really tuff, in which she replied ' there is nothing wrong with our food' our friend went on to say his meat was cold and dry and he wasn't able to chew it, again which she replied ' there is nothing wrong with our food, I've just pulled all your meat apart and there is nothing wrong with it' she went on to say ' Do You Want Something Else' which our friend replied ' well to be honest I've lost my appetite now ' She then went on to say 'well that's fine, i'll give you your money back and I would like you to all leave'. ...The group of people on the next table just gasped in disbelief, that she was so so rude. The girl in question was named Jodie Or Josie, after getting our coats we decided to speak to the manager thinking he should know what type of staff he has working for him, but to be honest his attitude was even worse than hers. in all fairness he did throw another £30 at us to get out of his pub and grabbed my arm to shove me out the door, his wife came down and just stood throwing dirty looks and looking us up and down as if we were dirt on her shoe......The whole situation could of been avoided if all the staff and manager had some sort of customer service skills, but to be honest it is a tourist place and they really don't care if you return or not because there will always be someone else to give them their hard earn't money.....After reading some of the other reviews they all say pretty much the same, they are nice to you until they have had your money...The group on the other table was going to eat but after seeing the way we was treated they decide not to bother.....I would definitely not recommend this place at all, they only want your money not interested in anything else, go to a place where they appreciate your custom and treat you with respect, we left there and went up to the white lion, the atmosphere was really lovely and the food they were bringing out looked really nice with generous portions..

Good food, good beer, good place to visit. Called in for a pub meal and was pleased I did. Staff very helpful and would recommend the Lamb steak as a main. Can't really say anythin else but have to use 200 characters, it was a good experience

Visited the lakes for the usual walking holiday. Stayed at the Unicorn Inn for 1 night in the twin room, it was a bit dated but can't complain too much as it was £60 room only or £76 including breakfast. It's right in the heart of Ambleside with easy access to everything you would need.

The staff were friendly but not overly, helpful but not overly. Just the way i like it - you are given your space but they are there when you need them.

I had a great time - would return for sure.

Typical of the area, this is a traditional, cosy pub, adorned with stuffed animals and exposed beams. The bar area is cosy and the ales were kept well (although there was a limited selection, this being a part of the Robinsons pub group). Although we didn't eat we did notice some other customers being served some very large sandwiches! It does everything it promises, delivering on atmosphere and comfort, so if you don't mind drinking a pint of Robinsons this place might well be worth a visit.

We stayed for one night before a walking holiday in the fells. When we turned up we were told it was cash only, and could we pay that night as we were only staying for one night. Then when we were showed to the room, we were asked again to pay for the room in cash that evening. So twice in 5 minutes, which I think is too much. The room was fine, clean; the bathroom was clean, tidy, the shower cubicle was tiny, I am only 5’5 and just fitted in and it had no light, so was a bit dark. Shower was pretty poor as well.

The beer was good, food was okay the whole experience was only but lacking in something.
