“Our first holiday together.......”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 7, 2012

This was our first holiday together and our first visit to Ambleside, and we are so happy that we chose to stay at Barnes Fell!
From the moment we arrived we felt welcomed and at ease. Ethna helped to make our four day stay very special. Her interest and advice helped us make the most of our holiday and we are very grateful for this.
Our room, the Wansfell, was perfect ; very comfortable and clean.
The breakfasts were delicious especially Ethna`s scrambled eggs, and we looked forward to them each morning!
Barnes Fell is situated in a lovely quiet part of Ambleside with beautiful views, yet is still within easy reach of the village. We noticed there were lots of B & B`s in the main part of Ambleside, but they were on busy roads with lots of traffic and people passing by.
The beautiful area in and around Ambleside was magical and we will definitely return.
We would not hesitate in staying at Barnes Fell again and would highly recommend this B & B to anyone seeking accommodation which has that personal touch.

myself and now my fiance stayed at Barnes Fell , for a long weekend , and we could not find fault, in fact it was a lovely b@b, situated just above ambleside , the owners ethna and nick were welcoming, friendly and gave us information on the local surrounding areas , the rooms were lovely, clean with little personal touches which made it special, the breakfasts on the morning were excellent which were cooked by nick, although ethna did cook us a breakfast on our departure day which was equally to the excellent standard we'd had all weekend, i would recommend Barnes Fell to anyone who is looking for excellent food, welcoming and personal touches ,clean and comfortable rooms and value for money it was outstanding , Thank you to you both and we will be definately returning next year xxx

Well what can I say that has not already been said. Stayed for two nights and wished it could have been longer. Stayed in the Fairfield room. A very pretty and comfortable room. The whole place is spotless. Breakfast was lovely, very filling and sets you up for the day. Ethna was very welcoming from the start. When we left it was like parting with an old friend. We'll be back.

My girlfriend and i have just returned from our 1 yr together anniversary weekend staying at the Barnes Fell in Ambleside the other weekend. From the minute we arrived Ethna welcomed us with open arms and got us parked in the public parking round the corner. So much so, that on Saturday morning we had a lovely anniversary card from Ethna and Nick. The setting is perfect and the room was ideal for two of us and plenty storage space for our kit and is really sweetly done out. Shower was amazing every morning to get us refreshed and ready to go...but paled into a well deserved second spot to the breakfasts...Nick...take a bow...Staying in the lakes, it would have been rude not to indulge in a "Full English"...so i wasn't rude. And the breakfasts were perfect...just the right amount and cooked to perfeection...with awesome poached eggs (plural...:-D). The BnB is up on e of the side streets up a wee hill, however...it is Ambleside...which is built on a hill..so not a problem...and was a nice walk after a meal and a few beers...
Nick is a mine of information on the lake district and the walks so don't be scared to ask (oh...and i know Ethna won't mind me saying...but Nick is also the chef...).
All in all this was a fabulous weekend in a fab B&B and we can't thank Ethna and Nick enough for their hospitality, humour and a great weekend...we shall return...:-D

Room Tip: Book well in advance and if possible go direct to Barnes Fell when booking.

We've just got back from a four night stay at Barnes Fell, and will definitely stay there again. The location is perfect, as it's so close to the centre of Ambleside but really peaceful. Ethna was welcoming and friendly from the minute we arrived until we left, with lots of helpful suggestions on local restaurants and walks. The breakfasts were incredible, and the view from the breakfast room was lovely. Great value for such a high quality B&B.

Stayed for a couple of nights while on a walking trip. Very charmingly presented B&B, up a steep road above the main road so off the beaten track but only a few minutes walk to the centre. Very well furnished and Ethna is a welcoming and very attentive host. Beautifully cooked breakfast. Our room, Wansfell, is small and so is short of storage space - OK for a short break but could be an issue for a longer spell. Also means you struggle a bit to find spots for all the damp kit when you come in from a typical Lakeland day! But the power shower is excellent at restoring you for the evening's entertainment. No car parking on site but space is available just round the corner - not a problem.

Room Tip: As above, Wansfell is quite small. I understand the other rooms are larger.
