Charming historic cottage in beautiful setting on Rydal Water, with friendly welcoming and helpful hosts. Generous home cooked meals, snug lounge with a proper fire for after days out walking. Idiosyncratic and unspoilt.

Myself and my partner stayed here for 2 nights for valentines. Upon our arrival we were greeted by the friendly daughter of the owner and a cosy real log traditional fire. The cottage was warm and really characterful. A lovely sitting room and a really nice breakfast/ dining room. The whole cottage inside and out had been cared for excellently and the furnishings were really fitting considering most of it seemed to be antique which is perfect for such a historic, old cottage.

The staff were really friendly and easy to get on with and make a great cooked breakfast.
Cottage set on a lake with fells behind it, so an absolutely fantastic setting too.

20 out 20! Definitely going again!

Many Thanks,
Tom

I stayed recently at Nab Cottage as I was travelling through the Lake District. We stayed overnight and had two smallish rooms looking out over the lake, Rydal water. It was just stunning waking up in the morning and looking straight out over the lake. There isa road in front of the house, but you can cross that road and you can then walk right round the lake. Behind the hotel is Nab Scar, a hugehill which you can also climb. Fantastic breakfast in the morning; really fresh, good service and home made bread.

Nab cottage is a one-off. The house is full of history you can feel in the walls, sitting on Rydal water you have numerous good walks at your feet, we relaxed in the outdoor hammocks and sauna and enjoyed the wide variety available at breakfast, the staff couldnt be more friendly and we enjoyed some special treatments from them.

I would recommend this B and B highly for a special Lakes experience.

The owners: Tim and Liz, have an innate warmth and friendliness that produces a relaxed atmosphere that somehow permeates the cottage.

History: Home for 16 years of the literary figure Thomas De Quincey, Author of the famous and semi-scandalous Confessions of an English Opium-Eater (1821).{ the cottage thoughtfully provides a modern edition of his book in a small cushioned ‘den’) De Quincey was a colourful character, prolific author, translator (of Schiller) and close long-term friend/collaborator with both Wordsworth and Coleridge

The location: Northern shore of Rydal Water with superb views southwards over the lake to Loughrigg Fell

Car-free walks : (borrowable maps are supplied). Easy level walks around Rydal water and/or Grasmere. 3 to 4 hour round trips; Southwards to Loughrigg Fell, Northwards to Heron Pike (or take the remarkably frequent bus [and incidentally avoid the punitive car parking charges] to set off from farther afield)

Our room: Comfortable with a lovely view over the lake (which was always mirror-still in the early mornings). Both our room and the en-suite shower were by no means spacious, as could be expected in a preserved 1702 structure. However, we spent little waking time in the bedroom, preferring instead the pleasant lounge and breakfast room

Breakfast: Excellent with veggie options available and home-made bread and marmalade served in a pleasant room

Facilities:A piano for the use of guests, a huge number of games in a cupboard, computer for guests’ use, canoe on the lake, literarure about De Quincey and the history of the cottage.

What we worried about before visiting: The very close proximity to the A 591 main road. However, we need not have worried since the cottage is set back sufficiently for the presence of the road to be scarcely realised

The cottage is in a great location, stunning views and walks (both easy and some more challenging) straight out of the door. Staff are very friendly and the service was on form, room was very comfortable with a nice view.

We stayed for two nights and enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere, and set up at Nab Cottage. We enjoyed the TV free room, instead chilling out in the sitting room with a view over Rydal Water. There is supply of literature, with regards to the previous tenants and walks which go straight from the front door.

I would definately stay here again.
