friendly staff, great location rooms not perfect but undergoing refurb nice shower although my hubby nearly broke his neck when slipping in bath due to no bath mat or hand rail so he was a bit sore , had to use floor towel in bath so it didn't happen again. room we were in was noisy but we were in front and it is a city centre. we were there 3 nights and room was cleaned everyday which was good. will probably stay again

Room Tip: choose a room at the back

About the best priced hotel in Hull. Great central location. Some rooms are very basic, but modernisation is under way. Rooms clean, beds ok, can't comment on food, as I have not tried it. Always try for a room at back. Views are rubbish but it is a lot quieter. Sure their are some draw backs, like limited parking, but on the whole, a great place to stay especially if on a budget.

Room Tip: Rooms at back are quieter

Location

Very central location (next to the train station) with a small parking area - note you could try a timed parking in the side streets or drive to Wilberforce St for free parking and 5 min walk to hotel.

Value

I stayed on a Friday and Saturday for £27/night for a single room. Although the room hasn't been decorated since the 80s, I prefer a cheap room rather than a brand new refurbished room.I stayed in room 233.

Facilities

Staff were friendly and provided me with a map of Hull and details of where to go out for the evening.

The staff were all pleasent and welcoming. The room had only a window that open half an inch and without air conditioning and a very hot night, it was unbelievable hot and we could not sleep, asked if we could hire a fan, told one would be brought up, but never turned up, I do not know if this was because the lift had broken down. Breakfast was OK

Room Tip: Not at the front

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at Gilson Hotel.

I am really sorry to hear that you found your room too hot and that we failed in delivering the fan as requested, this is certainly not reflecting onto the standards set by the company. We treat all our comments with utmost seriousness and we will be investigating your issues accordingly.

We are anyway looking forward to welcoming you back here in future.

We booked this hotel through a late booking sight on the date of our stay, and yes it was cheep, BUT we had done the same the week before and only paid £20 more for a Hilton room, so price isnt an excuse. The site said it was a "modern hotel with a contemporary style"....what it actually meant was that the rooms were painted in one colour with little or no furniture in! The furniture we had was falling apart (rocking wardrobes) and whilst the bathroom was nicely tiled in a brown colour we had a cheap nasty bright blue shower curtain. The curtains in the bedroom didnt fit the window! We opted to go for the breakfast included....dont bother, go to a local cafe. The cheapest sausage etc kept warm in a ban marie, stale bread and horrid coffee from a machine.

Room Tip: Pay £20 more and go to a good hotel!

This hotel is really good for the price. Our room was simple but adequate with a newly refurbished bathroom, clean towels and tea and coffee facilities. Staff were exceptionally friendly and nothing was too much trouble. There's a 24hour bar/lounge that was handy as and when we needed it! I didn't experience any noise during the night and central location meant that we could walk to and from our night out. It's not a hotel for a romantic getaway but a clean, friendly, cheap, convenient little find. There is very limited parking out front, but we managed to get two of the spots so I guess it's just luck of the draw, but I would probably have a back up plan for parking if needed.

Just came back from a weekend at the Gilson Hotel in Hull. As you may gather from other peoples reviews its predominantly an old hotel with a few age related issues such as odd (bolted, but by no means soundproof) connecting doors between adjacent rooms and, at least on warm days & nights, amazingly warm rooms with no aircon ( one of our gadgets was showing a steady 30 C overnight - even with the windows open!) However the hotel is very convenient for Hull city center or the rail station and we would have no qualms about staying here again, but preferably in cooler weather. The only real issue we had was when we came to leave an inconsiderate driver had blocked our car in and it took multiple, unanswered phone calls to his room a, visit to his room by the receptionist, and eventually the manager waking him up and getting him out of bed before he ( somewhat grumpily and very hung over in appearance) came and moved his car. The staff were very helpful and professional in resolving this issue, but it did illustrate that parking is an issue at this hotel and you may find it easier to park elsewhere.

Room Tip: With main roads on two sides and clubs that do late night karaoke to the rear, keeping windows open o...
