We have used this restaurant on & off for many years. A lovely place for a special meal, softly lit small & intimate & it never fails to please. Can really recommend the fish dishes- they are cooked to perfection. The steaks are also cooked perfect along with the vegetables. Staff are very pleasant & you are not "rushed". Really can 100% recommend.

The Lantern has been run by the same family for nearly 50 years! You have to know where it is or you won't actually see it in passing. The entrance is very tiny and you could easily pass it without noticing it is even there. The food is delicious so it is very much word of mouth why this place is full every weekend. There is only 1 vegetarian choice of main course but im happy with that one choice because we dont eat here often enough for me to get bored of it. The owner of the restaurant cooks the food by himself and you can see him cooking it. Sometimes there is a wait for food but the quality is worth the wait. We came here to treat our parents as it is their favourite restaurant and they have been coming here when they can for as long as they can remember. The only different thing I would like to see available is home made chips, rather than french fries. Really lovely restaurant and lovely people :0)

The Lantern is probably the oldest restaurant in Hull. Like it's already been said, it looks it. The decor is very dated. The location is also not great, the entrance hidden on Whitefriargate with the restaurant up some rather unwelcoming stairs.

If you're after a lively place for a date or meeting friends then this is not for you. Away from the weekend it will be very quiet and may close early.

If all you're after is some great freshly cooked meals then you won't be disappointed. The food is fresh and cooked to order so don't be in a rush! The steak has always been fantastic in my experience and the selection good for meat lovers. There is also a well stocked bar.

The Lantern is probably suited to the older generation but that's not always a bad thing!

Hidden away but well worth a visit, especially for the Porterhouse Steak. A nice classical menu that ticks all the boxes in terms of choice, quality and price along with a decent wine list. Decor and setting is dated and in need of modernisation and access could be better (steep stairs to enter and once inside same for toilets) but if you make it, the food is worth the physical effort! :)

This restaurant has been run by the same family since 1963 and its still there!! If you want fancy surroundings forget it bit if you want excellent quality freshly prepared food then this is the place for you. The owner only buys the best quality meat and vegetables and its all cooked in the kitchen open to the diners, there are only 1 or 2 chefs so you may have to wait for your food but its well worth it. There are no disabled facilities and steep stairs to the toilets so be warned. Can recommend the steaks but lots of other choices including fish and vegetarian options. This is my husbands favourite restaurant anywhere and we have been dining there for 20 years!!!
