Hull has some of the best museums in the UK (All free!) but a visit to/tour of the 'Arctic Corsair' Trawler has to be one of the most amazing experiences ever! The trawler is moored on the River Hull, just off the River Humber, at the rear of the museums. Hull was for many years the heart of the fishing industry.
The trawler is maintained/being restored by Volunteers. The Tour Guides are also Volunteers.
Barry, educated at Hull Trinity House, conducted my fabulous tour. His enthusiasm, charisma, knowledge, wit and warmth were fantastic. The experience made me fully realise just what Fishermen had to suffer in order to provide us with haddock, cod, other varieties of fish and cod liver oil . The hours they worked and the wet and freezing conditions they endured are very thought provoking. Apart from the Trawler there is a specific museum and an excellent introductory video which reminds you of the 'Icelandic Cod War', the sinking of the 'Gaul' and shows live sequences of fishing in horrendous weather conditions. As far as I am aware, this Tour is unique so DO NOT MISS IT !! Because this is an unfunded project a donation is very much appreciated. (For Tour times check their website).
