“DELICIOUS (BOTH THE STAFF AND THE FOOD!)”
Reviewed March 25, 2013

Had a lovely Sunday lunch at the George and Dragon. The pork belly was scrumptious, and so were the staff! Super friendly and the virgin elderflower spritzer was refreshing and the best cure for a sore head anyone could ask for. The only thing I have to say is praps make the "mind your step" sign in flashing lights, we were sat by that stair and everytime someone took a dodgy step I nearly choked on my roasty! Definitely coming back and bringing a crowd!

“Exactly what you expect from the oldest pub in SE UK”
Reviewed March 22, 2013 via mobile

Lovely building. Updates without changing the charm. Great Sunday lunch menu. Friendly service. We were a large group, all eating and drinking...aka... Larger bill. One of the group very nearly went in to diabetic shock, the response was very fast with a class of OJ and two biscuits. We all thought it was a bit cheeky when they charged for the biscuits.

“Used to be our favourite haunt - no longer”
Reviewed January 2, 2013

Just went to G&D for our 16th wedding anniversary. When we arrived the table we had booked (well in advance) was occupied by another couple. The staff moved the other couple, which was nice if somewhat embarrassing. We ordered bread and olives while we contemplated the menu. A few years ago, this used to be several styles of the most tasty artisan breads, but now consisted of 4 slices of white bread. When the bread arrived our order was taken, and we asked for side plates to eat off. After waiting for the plates for 10 minutes, we asked another waiter. Eventually plates arrived at the same time as scallops starter, so we were faced with scallops, olives and bread at the same time. Scallops were lovely, slightly on the underdone side, but always far better than overdone! I had partridge which was equally nice. My wife had venison, which was beautifully cooked but had been done on a grill which needed cleaning. The overwhelming taste was that of previously cooked steaks and burgers. To end we ordered a dessert which came straight out of a refrigerator. With a chocolate sauce that was rock hard and impossible to scape off the plate. We sent it back. The bill was then produced. We were not asked if we would like coffee, and they began to sweep up around the other tables... at 9:45pm. It has become a running joke that the handle on the men's toilet door has been broken for the past year.... and so it remains. One a great place to eat, sadly gone a long way downhill.

“OK food - if pricey, but place was freezing cold!”
Reviewed January 1, 2013

Ate here just before Christmas after a morning's shopping in Tunbridge Wells. Staff (mainly sixth formers on hols from one of the many local posh schools one imagines) seemed surprised by the lunch-time influx of similarly hungry Christmas shoppers - odd really as TW is one of the main shopping centres in the area. We were put in a dark room with a decidedly medieval feel, and similarly medieval temperatures - needed to keep my fleece, jumper and coat on until the 'antique' style - ie pretty useless, radiators had warmed up about an hour later! Menu was limited in scope but starters were fine, and main courses fairly well-cooked, though my wife's partridge was perhaps not the best she's ever tasted. Coffee sadly undrinkable - even at a second attempt.
Prices par for the course for this part of the world - ie high! Service probably did not merit the compulsory 12.5% added to the bill - pretty hard to attract the attention of a waiter when there was a problem.
May visit again - I notice that some reviews are more positive. The place clearly has great potential though has had just the 800 years to realise it! Some proper heating, and a decent coffee machine might make all the difference.

“Best place to eat”
Reviewed December 22, 2012

As a young couple we wanted to try somewhere just out of town and heard of the George and Dragon & we were not disappointed.

Beautiful old pub with traditional wood features & open log fire. Food was exceptional. We had the salmon starter & Sirloin steak. Nice selection of drinks. Good Real ale selection.

The waitress was so polite & friendly. The manager was friendly and helpful too.

WOULD RECOMMEND. And we plan to return very soon!
