“Overpriced and disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 2, 2012

Went for lunch on a Saturday. It's a lovely looking place, very old (800 years old) and a real village pub feel.

However, I can't help feeling very disappointed by the experience. The menu is interesting and varied. Although it says children are welcome, it's not geared to children at all.

The duck ordered was in a sauce so sweet and sugary that it completely overpowered the flavour of the meat. Although it was a plum sauce, which is expected to be sweet, this was too much. It was a very small portion for £17.

The steak was good, although the accompanying frozen chips were not good at all. Some chunky, hand cut chips would have been great.

Desserts were very disappointing.

The service is very slow and the food is horrendously expensive for the portion sizes.

Could have been excellent. But won't be going back and can't recommend

“Perfect Venue for a Celebration”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 30, 2012

The George and Dragon is and has been over the years a top quality Gastropub that is worthy of a visit what ever the occasion. The location, the staff, the service, the quality of food are all excelent. If you have the opportunity go there. You will not be disappointed! Five Stars!

“slow service, average food, ridiculously expensive”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 3, 2012

Our visit was for a large family group sunday lunch. Its a lovely old building with a pleasant atmosphere. However, suprisingly these days, disabled access was extremely poor, and it is (probably intentionally) not family friendly in terms of envirnoment or menu choice. Although the front-of-house staff were generally very pleasant and helpful, the slow service which appears to be a characteristic feature of this establishment was once again manifest (NB obligatory 12.5% service charge!) The food itself was distinctly average, apart from the lovely homemade bread, and sadly, largely served on bits of wood. The ingredients may well have been of the highest quality, but were neither well prepared nor well presented: sausages, chicken and roast beef served luke warm and all soaked in the same red wine gravy, together with a small quantity of rather sad vegetables. The Spanish ham board was a main course which would disappoint even if ordered as a starter! Even if it had been good, which it wasnt, the final bill was excessive.

Overpriced pub grub that wouldnt look out of place in pub chain!

Terrible when Iceland frozen French fries are used. Lazy chef!

Scallops were cooked well though :)

“Great Food. Very slow service.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 14, 2012

The G&D is our local and now very much an eating pub rather than a trad Village pub. The food was very good indeed when three of us ate there sitting not far from the bar on the restaurant side. The biggest issue was the service which was just far too slow and inattentive. We waited longer than we should have for almost everything we ordered. We were not offered more drinks and the pub missd out on another wine order. The Starter and Mains when they arrived were all very good but we gave up on dessert after waiting far too long. There was little to no concern or proper apology and the staff were just a little oblivious.

It is a shame because it is a great property, the food was very good, local and fresh and well cooked and presented. With the owners expanding locally I hope they don't spread themselves too thin and fail to address the service issues.

I'm sure after a break we will give it another go.
