Description: This one-time home of the author of Vanity Fair in spa town Tunbridge Wells is one of the most charming restaurants in England. An enchanting atmosphere pervades two gloriously elegant dining rooms overlooking the green. The food is equally beguiling. Co-proprietor and former head chef at MPW’s Criterion Richard Phillips serves an intelligent, technically-perfect Modern French menu that’s infinitely worth travelling for - you won’t be able to prepare food like this at home.

We had a wonderful birthday meal at Thackeray's. The food was divine, from an amuse- bouche of Kentish snails to perfectly cooked scallops with cep mushroom risotto and generous portions of beef and venison, followed by apricot soufflé and a dark chocolate pave. The wine list was more limited but great value and we enjoyed Prosecco and a glass of red. The service was also good although there were only three couples dining. Because of the emptiness on a Wednesday evening, the atmosphere was slightly lacking, We will definitely return to Thackeray’s and have already recommended it to friends.

Another fabulous lunch at Thakerays, their set menu at lunch and dinner is such good value! From the divine amuse bouche of sweet cured cod and buttered prawns to the line caught mackeral with bread crumbed mussels, the food never fails to impress.
Congratulations to Richard, Gary and the team at Thakerays for this well deserved award.

I still can't find a restaurant that serves such excellent food and matching wines for 3 courses for 2 people for around £100 (using set menu).

The personal service and attention to detail, make you feel like you're a member of a private dining club, with Gary always remembering faces and making a special fuss of you on your birthday.

It's our once a mnth treat, perfect for date night,

The first lunchtime visit for a while , I was very impressed with the whole experience.Service was professional , but also friendly. We had the set meal, elected to have the recommended wines for the first and main courses and the advice was spot on.
All the courses were well presented and tasty, in particular the guinea fowl
. The meal was rounded off with coffee and petit four.

What a lovely place to eat. The history of the house is interesting and the restaurant therefore does't offer the usual layout you expect which adds to it's charm.

We we t for lunch and chose the lunch menu. A very interesting mix of options for good value.
Staff were incredibly attentive and all the food was absolutely lovely.
The only niggle is that we were in a corner with a big lamp behind me which stopped me from being able to lean back. Other than that, would definitely go back.
