Description: This one-time home of the author of Vanity Fair in spa town Tunbridge Wells is one of the most charming restaurants in England. An enchanting atmosphere pervades two gloriously elegant dining rooms overlooking the green. The food is equally beguiling. Co-proprietor and former head chef at MPW’s Criterion Richard Phillips serves an intelligent, technically-perfect Modern French menu that’s infinitely worth travelling for - you won’t be able to prepare food like this at home.

Another fabulous lunch at Thakerays, their set menu at lunch and dinner is such good value! From the divine amuse bouche of sweet cured cod and buttered prawns to the line caught mackeral with bread crumbed mussels, the food never fails to impress.
Congratulations to Richard, Gary and the team at Thakerays for this well deserved award.

I still can't find a restaurant that serves such excellent food and matching wines for 3 courses for 2 people for around £100 (using set menu).

The personal service and attention to detail, make you feel like you're a member of a private dining club, with Gary always remembering faces and making a special fuss of you on your birthday.

It's our once a mnth treat, perfect for date night,

“Excellent experience”
Reviewed November 17, 2013 via mobile

The first lunchtime visit for a while , I was very impressed with the whole experience.Service was professional , but also friendly. We had the set meal, elected to have the recommended wines for the first and main courses and the advice was spot on.
All the courses were well presented and tasty, in particular the guinea fowl
. The meal was rounded off with coffee and petit four.

“Little bit cramped”
Reviewed November 16, 2013

What a lovely place to eat. The history of the house is interesting and the restaurant therefore does't offer the usual layout you expect which adds to it's charm.

We we t for lunch and chose the lunch menu. A very interesting mix of options for good value.
Staff were incredibly attentive and all the food was absolutely lovely.
The only niggle is that we were in a corner with a big lamp behind me which stopped me from being able to lean back. Other than that, would definitely go back.

“Poor in many regards”
Reviewed November 15, 2013

Visited Thackeray's recently in a large family group including children for Sunday lunch. Meal took nearly 3 hours, service was slow and the restaurant had a terrible attitude towards catering for children. Complete unwillingness to even rustle up a bowl of chips for a 5 year old or a simple pasta in tomato sauce (how tough can that be?) despite fact we were spending a lot of money there. Roast beef was was rare (the only option) and incredibly chewy bordering on inedible. Even refused to offer any simple ice cream for the kids when ordering desserts beyond whatever ice cream was part of the "fancy" desserts on offer. Unwilling to accept that in spending so much money on a large group event they have no flexibility in rustling up some chips, pasta or vanilla ice cream. Won't be going back

“Superb food with lovely Italian wine”
Reviewed November 14, 2013

Just returned to our hotel after enjoying a FAB five course meal at Thackerays in Tunbridge Wells with some fantastic Italian wine to accompany each course. The evening was hosted by Richard Phillips friendly team expertly managed by Gary and Craig with each course being introduced by guest Master Sommelier Vincent Gasnier - (wine supplier to high end catering establishments such as the Ivy in London).

The food was prepared and served to the usual high standard that is expected in Thackerays - and although Vincent is French all the wines selected this evening were Italian.

A lovely dining experience - have already booked for the Thackerays 'rural French evening' in January, when again the wines will be selected and introduced by skilled and friendly Sommelier Vincent Gasnier!
