Description: This one-time home of the author of Vanity Fair in spa town Tunbridge Wells is one of the most charming restaurants in England. An enchanting atmosphere pervades two gloriously elegant dining rooms overlooking the green. The food is equally beguiling. Co-proprietor and former head chef at MPW’s Criterion Richard Phillips serves an intelligent, technically-perfect Modern French menu that’s infinitely worth travelling for - you won’t be able to prepare food like this at home.

For a special occasion Thackeray's is unrivalled - a real culinary experience with the apple tart tatin dessert to share a real highlight - DELICIOUS. Complimentary starters and desserts and interesting loaves of bread to have before the main course were a nice touch.

We had the seven course tasting menu. It was a real experience and allowed us to sample a good number of the restaurant's dishes. The scallops were my favourite, closely followed by an innovative take on Black Forest Gateau. The only downside was that we were placed on a table that used a bench seat, in front of a window, for one side of the table's seating. The uncomfortable, bench is not somewhere you'd like to spend a few hours particularly as it's not supportive or adjustable to the table position. If you're going make sure you get proper chairs - then you're guaranteed a great time.

Went for lunch today with an old friend from university and I was very happy with the choice of location. The food was excellent and served quickly and discretely..

We both chose from the three course lunch menu and with wine and tip came in at 100 pounds, so not your everyday lunch but for a special occasion or business meeting I would recommend it...
