“Cling film soup”
Reviewed February 8, 2013

We normally just drink here but on this occasion my girlfriend was hungry so she ordered the soup and roll from the bar menu.
Unfortunately it came piping hot and obviously microwaved with bubbles around the edge of the soup.
The worst thing of all was the cling film in the soup itself, not good.
We complained and got a refund and an apology but still not good enough.
We still drink in the pub as it has a nice feeling but have not tried the food again.
Another down side of this pub is the smell from the men's toilets wafting through the bar all the time, I have mentioned this to the management but to no avail, surely a good scrub of the toilets is not beyond them? It would make a lot of difference!

“Great times”
Reviewed November 11, 2012

Excellent atmosphere and food. HIghly recommended. Real fires in the oldest pub in Royal Tunbridge Wells. Fish and chips were great, and excellent choice of ales.

“Great find”
Reviewed October 28, 2012 via mobile

Well I really liked this place. Found myself here starving with friends on a Sunday evening. Great atmosphere and happily sat here playing cards all evening. Other mixed groups having a good time playing Jenga and generally enjoying a (slightly tipsy) evening. Nice fire with a couple of friendly dogs mooching about looking for attention. There were a few (well behaved) kids hanging around which is great in the right pub but this felt like a relaxed couples/groups grown up kinda place. Anyhoo I found the food hearty, epic and delicious. Very friendly barman and waitress. Barman happy to offer samples of ale for you to choose from. Planning to return with the wife next time I'm in the area.

“Reasonably Priced all rounder!”
Reviewed October 9, 2012 via mobile

The Compasses has a town wide reputation for having one of the lowest priced beer offerings including Becks Vier at £3.25/pint. Wines may be a little more expensive than some other bars but the selection is good.
The food menu is produced by willing and capable staff who take pride in their offering. The menu is varied and diverse with mains and specials in the region of £12.50. Thought has gone into the desert offering, which is unusual these days and much to be applauded.
Most front of house staff are friendly, but one can appear a little surly at times.
Food hygiene is rated at the top level of 5. Public areas are usually kept very clean and if there is an issue that has gone unnoticed the staff are very attentive in resolving the matter.
A real log fire can be seen on cooler evenings which is a lovely addition to the warm atmosphere.
With 4 distinct dining areas there is plenty of space for larger parties in an easily cordoned off area.
The external parts could do with some redecoration as they are becoming very tired and worn but internally most areas are fine.
I take a pride in the accuracy of my reviews and have thoroughly researched what is written.

“Unwelcoming and rude”
Reviewed September 18, 2012

Would never go there again !!! The bar man was rude and very arrogant. DO NOT GO TO THIS PUB !!! We felt incredibly unwelcoming. Other pubs that we visit in the area, are lovely and welcoming !!
