Lovely location, walking distance to town, but just outside in quieter, greener area. Very friendly and helpful staff in all functions including Spa a, comfortable rooms, attractive grounds and very good food.

1st impressions, lovely hotel, facade and interior is lovely...rooms are well appointed, well furnished and very nice. Bar area, public areas are very nice.

However, felt as soon as we arrived, lack of warmth from staff, bit of a 'faceless' environment and lack of information and attention... Weren't told where breakfast was served, not told time.. Handed keys, 2nd floor that sort of thing.

This was a special use night for my 14yr old daughter and I.. Birthday and Xmas present fir treatments and a nights stay.. A little bit of care, attention and warmth would go a long way

We took the Valentines Break at the hotel for Dinner, Bed and Breakfast (£250) and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We did not use the spa facilities but the hotel came up to our expectations in every other way.

From our arrival (in foul weather conditions) we were made to feel welcome. The staff were exceptional in their caring and attentive service. Our room was large and beautifully furnished and the bed was very comfortable.

Dinner was delicious and presented beautifully, the light jazz provided an enjoyable background sound. Never obtrusive but pleasant to listen to.

In the morning breakfast was the standard but none the less delicious for that.

The hotel was well maintained and I could imagine that a walk in the gardens (weather permitting, which it wasn't) would be delightful.

All in all, an experience we would be happy to repeat.

We booked this hotel late because the floods prevented us going to the south west. Valentine's Day is our wedding anniversary so we were really disappointed. I found this hotel on Trip Advisor and rang them. They went out of their way to make it work for us. It was a short, easy train ride from London. Even in terrible weather this hotel is beautiful. To our amazement the staff upgraded us to a four poster room. It was stunning - there's no other word for it, with the most beautiful view through enormous sash windows to the garden. The bathroom was huge with a massive freestanding bath. We were too late for Friday night's Valentine's dinner but the food in The Orangery was great. We loved our wedding anniversary weekend - the staff are pretty much all outstanding, the food and service were excellent. Although this hotel is very elegant we felt completely relaxed there and didnt feel tempted at all to brave the weather to leave the hotel.

Room Tip: If you have the option to go for a four poster room we would definitely recommend it.

We stayed on a Sunday night and were lucky enough to be upgraded (for free) to a 4 poster room, regardless of the fact that it was a quiet Sunday, they didn't have to upgrade us, so it was greatly appreciated!

Room was excellent, especially the bathroom (shower!!!!) we didn't try the restaurant nor bar... BUT they looked very nice and we would normally trust the AA's judgement.

We had access to spa facilities (no treatments included) and had a great time in a deserted pool and sauna.

The hotel is only a short stroll to the old town (7-10 min max) although the way back up the hill may be a bit much for the chronically obese or sheer lazy.

We stayed here for one night in February. I managed to get a really reasonable rate so wasn't expecting great things but the hotel was beautiful. After reading the room tips in here I asked for a contemporary room overlooking the gardens. Unfortunately all the rooms at the back of the hotel were reserved but our room was immaculate and had a large spotlessly clean bathroom. Breakfast was not included and was pricey (£14 per head) but was nicely presented and tasty with the exception of the watery tasteless scrambled egg.

The spa itself had a lovely warm pool and comfy poolside beds to relax on. The champagne bar was also really impressive but one of the male bar staff could take some lessons on how to speak to guests as he was quite rude when we dared to ask if we could eat some food at the bar as all the tables were reserved.

We saw some other guests having afternoon tea in the lobby and this looked really impressive too. All in all a very memorable stay and we would definitely love to return.

Our wedding night (ceremony & reception elsewhere).
Beautiful four-poster room with huge bathroom. Breakfast in our room was hot and very well presented. Helpful reception staff at check-in (after 2300) and check-out.
