Plenty of parking and the opportunity to walk and explore the different types of environment and wildlife in tranquil surroundings. Ideal spot for picnics.

“Once a good place for a nature walk. Once.”
Reviewed July 26, 2012

The area around Pegwell Bay, from a naturalist's point of view, is a great place to wander around. As a person who holidayed for years in Ramsgate, I spent my formative years as a birdwatcher seeing many of my first species here. When I moved to Ramsgate, I considered Pegwell Bay my "local patch" for bird watching and as such will always have an affection for the area. However, if you want a proper wildlife experience nowadays, sadly the Country Park is not the place to come. It is still a pleasant place to wander and there is a hide for birders, but there are ongoing problems with irresponsible dog owners. Most dog owners are aware that this an important breeding area for birds and other wildlife but a minority don't seem to care. Countless times I have been to Pegwell and watched dogs tearing across the mudflats, putting to flight huge swarms of waders. Twice now I have been told where to go when I challenge the owners. It's not only the dog problem either: during the summer I have often seen pleasure yachts, canoeists and jet skiers in the Stour Estuary which is supposed to be a protected area. On the other side of the estuary is the RSPB reserve and is probably a better place to head to if you are a birder (but has to be approached from Sandwich via Royal St George's Golf Course) although the hide in Pegwell offers unmatched views of the flats, bringing waders close in when they are not disrupted. Stonelees, a small reserve further along the path from the car park is marked by tank traps along its eastern boundary and is a good place to catch passage migrants. To sum up, if you are not a wildlife enthusiast and just want a nice place to stroll and sample the sea air then by all means come and enjoy the Country Park. If you like your nature, it's best to avoid the area as I, reluctantly, have had to do.
