“Gem of a house”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 13, 2013

There are few opportunities in the year to visit Pugin's house, but when it is open, for anyone who is a fan of his style of decoration and architecture, it is a treat not to be missed. You will marvel at the loving detail he included to make this house truly personal to reflect his taste and values. The restoration has been painstakingly carried out and since The Grange is available as a holiday home through the Landmark Trust for most of the year, it continues to feel 'lived in'.

“Deserves to be better known”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 13, 2013

This extraordinary house was designed by Augustus W.N. Pugin for his own family and has been carefully restored by the Landmark Trust. It is now possible to stay there but it is also open to the public on certain days. We were shown round by Penny from the Landmark Trust, who was an exemplary guide, full of enthusiasm for her subject and a delightfully clear and interesting speaker. The interior is very rich and the whole effect is overwhelming. Try and visit St Augustine's next door (also designed by Pugin as part of his attempt to create a Catholic Christian community in Ramsgate).

“Pugin's genius at it's finest”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2013

If you are a lover of architecture, history, or just good honest eccentricity (and I'm all three!) the Grange is a definite must-visit! Augustus Pugin was a very fine architect and designer, and two of his most famous works are the Grange, here in Ramsgate, and the Palace of Westminster. This building is stunning, and Catriona, from the Pugin Society, who escorted me around, extremely knowledgeable on all matters Pugin. I went on an open day - it isn't always open, so please check - and thoroughly enjoyed my visit.

“Fascinating property”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 3, 2013

I visited on its annual open day to see this remarkable neo-gothic home of the renowned 19th Century architect Augustus Pugin. It has been much restored using bold wallpaper and ceiling panels inspired by the original design and so each room was a riot of colour. It was fascinating to read about the layout being pioneering for a family home of the time (designed from the inside out rather than focus being on the exterior). Was able to see the living room, study, dining room, kitchen, chapel and bedrooms plus the roof terrace (with fantastic views) and the garden (secluded but plain). Rooms were light and well-proportioned whilst the furnishings themselves remained relatively modest. If you get the chance to visit this property, you should also see the church next door which is Pugin's resting place.
