“Please avoid if you want to sleep”
Reviewed July 18, 2013

Impossible to sleep, since the window can't be closed and the road is just outside. The only difference between sleeping outside on the lawn and in this hostel is the roof.

The stairway is very narrow and steep, so if you have a big bag, then it can be difficult to get in and out. Please note that the tap water in the bathroom isn't possible to drink.

Room Tip: There are one ore two rooms not facing the road, so if you are forced to use this hostel, try to get...

I booked on line - and arrived to find a decrepit building (even the windows are boarded up) and a very rude manager/owner who didnt want to let us in as we were before the 3pm opening time. He told us, in no uncertain terms, to go away. I cancelled the booking of course - but the small print on booking.com permits him to take the money anyway. My recommendation would be to avoid the place (Dover is full of excellent B&Bs) and probably avoid booking.com as well.

Nice, conveniently located small hostel near centre of Dover. Landlord was willing to provide earlier than usual breakfast for me to be able to catch early ferry back to Europe! A bit noise from the street as situated on main road, but ok for an inner city hostel! Very modern and clean bathroom and showers!

Easy to find, literally 1 minute walk from Dover Priory Train Station and it was cheap and cheerful for 1 night, but that was enough for my friend and I - 2 nights would of been ok at a push. The building is an eyesore, horrible looking and sticks out like a sore thumb. The security system is great, but please remember this place is a "backpackers", so don't expect even 1 star service. The bathrooms are extremely tiny, the sinks are in a weird position, but the beds were comfy and slept ok. The hot water was great too! The TV reception and TV's are awful. Breakfast was fantastic, but the waiter did not switch on the lights and it was freezing in this gloomy small restaurant. For the price we paid - it was very good. Please do not consider bringing children here, the loneliness of the building is not very re-assuring and looks spooky.

Room Tip: No choice really!

the hostel looks dirty from the outside, The front door does not open fully and is hard to get in with luggage, narrow winding stairs, The heating was not working on arival and we had to call the Hostel to come and fix it. The rooms walls had more finger prints than the Police national database. there where several spots of Mould in the room. The 3 beded room was verry small and cramped, there was no space to put your clothes apart from 2 coat hangars, there was no where to put your luggage, the bathroom was 1 square meetre, to use the sink you neded to stand in the shower. there was only hand towels provided. there was a loose plug socket on the wall of room 4, hairs in the shower base, also the carpet had a rip in it so this was also dangerous.
also it is worth noting that breakfast is only served 7-8 am which to me is rather lame.

The accomodation has a kitchen for guests to use, it has no cooker but atleast there is a microwave and toaster, fridge, and a kettle. along with plates and cutlery.

It has almost every facility you would want in a hostel and some more, really value for money for the price, great location close to everything. Free wifi, shared kitchen, free tea coffee and rich tea biscuits ;)

I would recommend to any one looking for a decent hostel.

Room Tip: Choose a room away from the road

The Alma hostel can be seen from the main Folkestone Road upon exit of the Dover Priory train station. The building is a bit dowdy looking but the rooms inside are very clean and warm. Probably the cleanest hostel we've ever stayed in. Well equipped with a good flat screen TV. However, walls are thin between the rooms so can hear neighbours speaking and their TV quite clearly although everyone was quiet after 11pm.

Excellent value for money as booked at last minute (£40 per night) during Easter season where everywhere else was £85+ online. Breakfast was continental and good. I found the owners to be very reasonable hosts both in character and mannerism (very fair to deal with and courteous to all guests there) so there was no aggression/arrogance/bad attitude from them whatsoever. We were very comfortable there and ended up extending our stay (even got a discount for the extra night). Easy to leave luggage after check out then pick up en-route for the train station. One complaint is that the breakfast area inside the cafe did not have heating on so rather cold and shivery.

Room Tip: If you have a lot of luggage, perhaps ask for a room on the first floor instead of 2/F as the stairc...
