Dover Castle is a place that will appeal to all kinds of people! Myself and my boyfriend are students at Canterbury and decided we wanted something interesting to do one Saturday so came to Dover Castle thinking it wouldn't be as good as it was!
The castle is huge and the has many great features inside. It is decorated how it would have looked years ago and staff are inside giving information. There were audiovisual effects were great and I feel younger children would have found these interesting.
We decided to go into the underground hospital which was great except I wish we could have stayed down there longer as I found it so interesting and although was 20-30 minutes long only felt like 5! The tour guide Jennifer had a lot of knowledge about the underground hospital and castle and answered questions that guests had to a really good standard. When we went inside the underground hospital a man in a wheelchair was in our group and the staff easily accommodated his needs which i felt was very good and useful to any tourists visiting in a wheelchair!
The views around Dover are great! It cost us £14 each to get in as we are students but we wish we had opted for the yearly English Heritage pass which was something like £35 for us and would allow us to visit other sites across Scotland, Wales and England. This was a pleasant surprise that we enjoyed the trip and have now turned into history geeks who will be going to view more of what the English Heritage has to offer!

Take a picnic
Make sure you queue early for the tunnels as a lot of people want to go in these
Wear sensible shoes as quite hilly

“England's biggest and most impressive medieval castle”
Reviewed March 13, 2013 via mobile

A worthy day out that will suit all tastes, from grandad, who will love underground war rooms, to the kids who will see what a real castle is like. English Heritage run many events here and loads of special days for kids. The inside of the keep has been furnished in medieval style to make it credible for visitors and on occasions you will see people wandering about in costumes of the period. The thing with English Heritage is that their staff, most of whom are volunteers, are extremely well informed. So ask away and they will have an answer. I met a guy wandering about dressed as an archer and asked him what arrowhead was best for piercing armour, he instantly replied ' a bodkin, of course'. Clever clogs. I won't go into any history except to tell you that originally the castle was made of clay and when William the Conquerer arrived the defendants ran away. William burnt the place down and then paid to have it rebuilt using the old clay as the flooring for the keep.Strange chap. Also there is a Roman lighthouse here, one of a pair, the other being on the Western Heights. Great stuff. Anyway, parking is good, although you will probably have to use the overflow carpark in July and August. Dover has a fast train service to London. Tips- take a picnic, you can sit atop the cliffs and enjoy the spectacular views. Visit the tunnels first, before the queues build up and then you don't have to rush the castle. Buy an annual ticket and you can enjoy hundreds of English Heritage properties all year. Enjoy.

Absolutely fantastic day out- Great value for money compared to other castles in the area (Leeds being one!) Informative and rather moving tour of the wartime tunnels and the castle itself was huge with lots and lots of gems suddenly stumbled upon! The audiovisual effects were very tastefully done and in keeping with the stories. Loved the entire day. The only downside was the lack of variety in the restaurant. We visited Beaulieu last weekend and were probably rather spoilt with the catering facilities they had there...so were perhaps expecting something similar. Nevermind! The coffee was good and the day was excellent! You need many many hours to see it all! :)

Fantastic place and beautiful medieval castle. We've been there at the beginning of April , there weren't people at all!!! We've been practically alone, and it was so thrilling!!! From the top of castle you can see fantastic view of cliffs and sea. I don't reccomend go at underground tour there- it was so cold and boring!
