Description: We hope you're feeling hungry... Look forward to robust, fresh flavors served with imagination and flair in east Kent's newest contemporary restaurant. Our Head Chef presides over heavenly menus that change regularly and use locally caught fish and locally sourced produce. The wine, beer and drinks list is also top notch. Old school... New World... Kent wines from Kent vineyards... Local real ales... Great taste is everything at the Marquis.

Once again The Marquis at Alkham has impressed us! The Kent 4 course tasting menu was a delight. Very delicious, artistically presented gems!

We had a wonderful lunch to celebrate a friends Birthday. The waiter was attentive and knew about the food he was serving and kept the wine flowing. We enjoy the finest and that is what.we got. We will be back many thanks.

We had looked forward to this dinner as a special event and a treat for a friend. It turned out to be an underwhelming experience! Additionally, be careful not to ground your car as you drive in up a steep slope to the car park!!!

If you go make sure you have eaten well in advance as the main course that I had is Beautiful To Behold - but portioned for very small appetites. Fine if you have many courses, as in a taster menu, but inadequate for an average three course meal. Having eaten in Angela Hartnett's London Restaurant two weeks previously it was also striking that the cost was very high for an out of town venue.

To be fair the service was attentive, but the ambience was somewhat lacking, perhaps because there were few people on this midweek night. The starter (scallops) was good, (I am still unsure exactly what 'alexanders' are despite the waiter's description of 'moss') but the size of the main course (seared skirt of dexter beef) - although nicely cooked - was an inadequate portion of four small pieces of meat. Something in the dish was also extremely salty (I do not have salt on my food so am very aware of of its presence. It may have also contributed to the later upset stomach). I would normally say something at the time, but this is difficult when you are with friends who are celebrating a special event as you do not want to spoil their visit. The real test is whether I would return........probably unlikely.

We stayed at the hotel as part of a walk along the Kent coast - hotel reviewed elsewhere on the site. First, a word of caution. If booking a package, check exactly what you are getting. Our order included a 4 course meal - we didn't realise until we arrived that this meant that there was only one menu option for each course. To choose from a different menu would have meant paying extra. The service was poor, with waiters fighting amongst themselves. Our first course was given to someone else, which may have thrown timings off in the kitchen. There was no apology or explanation. Food itself was unusual and interesting, with some very strong flavours. The rabbit accompaniment particularly would not be for everyone.

The starter of a hen's egg and salad was pleasant if undistinguished. The fish was coley which was done about as well as it could be, although I'm not convinced it deserves a place on a fine dining menu.
I liked the main course of rabbit, although the rabbit itself was dry and a little tough. Carrot cake and lemon curd ice cream was the best course.

Overall, we thought that the chef is probably better than this experience shows, but they have to sort out the service. We strongly got the impression of a lack of leadership.

We booked for lunch for my birthday using the Travelzoo voucher. It was about a 45 minute drive for us but the trip was worth it and we would definitely return.

We had the 4 course tasting menu and everything that was served to us was fresh, well prepared and executed perfectly. Little touches like the walnut pesto in the soup and the beetroot/cauliflower flavours with the fish really made a difference.

The restaurant itself has been tastefully renovated and the muted Grey on the walls keeps the place light and calming, whilst retaining a hint of vintage with a modern twist.

The staff were friendly and clearly knew about every dish as it was served, explaining all the elements on the plate.

There was no pretentious air about the Marquis, just fine dining in a lovely surrounding with lovely views across the village from the comfortable sofas in the bar area.

One we would return to without a voucher!!!
