“Absolutely Fantastic!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 8, 2014

Celebrated my special Birthday here with my family and it was absolutely fantastic! We had their celebration package which included afternoon tea, pre-dinner drink, four course dinner and a room for the night! The afternoon tea was great, beautiful sandwiches and cakes and a lovely glass of their sparkling wine! Dinner was fantastic, beautifully presented and the best lamb shank we've ever had!

All the rooms we had were lovely with great views across the countryside. The staff were warm and welcoming and couldn't do enough for us! Everything was just wonderful and we haven't stopped talking about it! It really was a the perfect place to celebrate! It was so good that our Son and his fiancee are hoping to have their wedding there!

We have no problem with the quality of the rooms and the welcome greeting of the staff - we have stayed here before.
We did however find this time that the food and the service at both dinner and breakfast to be of a very poor standard.
The menu looked very good but we felt that the chef was just not up to delivering the complex food on a timely basis to the number of covers in the restaurant. We noticed several couples waiting for food and in our case it took over 100 minutes to deliver two out of four courses - yes I know if we want fast food etc but there is well paced services allowing you to enjoy the food and slow service where eventually you just loose the will to eat.
Breakfast the following morning was again very poor with a very limited selection of the suggested food for the continental breakfast and no attempt was made to correct this.
Perhaps we hit a bad night but we will never know as at the prices charged we will not be back - cannot take the risk that the services will repeat itself.

We were treated to 1 night's dinner, bed & breakfast by friends and this was the best B&B that we've stayed at in the UK. On arrival, there was plenty of car parking & a very welcoming check-in. We stayed in one of the standard double rooms (Malmains room). Everything worked in the room with fully adjustable air conditioning and heating. The room was decorated in a modern style and was spotlessly clean and extremely well maintained. We had a good night's sleep - very quiet location. We will definitely be going back to stay and will consider a suite or one of the cottages that The Marquis offers. Our meal was from the a la carte menu & was of an excellent quality, with faultless service. All the staff fully understood the menu and all the ingredients within the locally sourced dishes. The restaurant decor, as with the rest of the building was of a very modern style and had a lovely atmosphere. The full english breakfast (again locally sourced) was excellent. The B&B is perfectly situated for the Turner Contemporary in Margate (20 minutes drive) and other East Kent attractions as well as having good local walks.

What an amazing weekend! Staff were so helpful, friendly and welcoming without being over bearing. The food was first class and we found the restaurant staff extremely professional. The cleanliness of our room & en suite was to a very high standard. We can't wait to go back again!

This was, hands down, one of the nicest B&Bs we'd ever stayed in. Our room was spacious and modern while still being homey, and we were even upgraded for free due to another cancellation! The location of the B&B is fantastic--it's about 20 minutes away from the White Cliffs, and very convenient to the Chunnel.

The food there is awesome. We opted to stay in for dinner, and everything we ordered was fantastic. The same with breakfast the next day. The waffles are thick and cakey and filling.

For those who are staying for a longer trip, they had walking trail guide maps so you could enjoy the beautiful countryside. I'd definitely love to stay there again.

We were in the Collard room, beautifully appointed, black and white, very glam, especially liked the boudoir bedside lights and lampshades ! The food started with the 'to die for' caramelised onion roll, how on earth did they pack so much flavour into it ?! The amuse bouche was delicious, as was the rest of the 6 course tasting menu. The only thing I didn't care for was the salted caramel ice cream which accompanied the pear soufflé, I like salt, but it was too salty for my taste. The staff were charming and had a good knowledge of the products. We dined on a Thursday night, it was nice to see the dinning room almost full, they are obviously doing something right.

My partner and I stayed here for a very special occasion. The moment we arrived I knew it was going to be an amazing stay for us and I was not wrong. We were greeted by friendly member of staff who escorted us to our room, we had been upgraded to the Great Everden superior room which was fantastic; tastefully decorated with a king size bed, underfloor heating, tea, coffee maker, large TV, bath and shower room, his and hers sinks, toiletries, room service, two wardrobes, slippers and robes and a private terrace with table and chairs. Our room was situated at the top of the stairs right at the back so it was peaceful and quiet for us to relax and enjoy. The rooms are accessed by a private corridor so you have privacy. My partner had arranged for champagne and flowers in the room as a surprise for me when I arrived and everything was there when I walked in. Stunned was an understatement. Staff are very knowledgeable in regards to the area and they recommend a walk to us and after breakfast we went for the walk and it was a really good walk with stunning views. I highly recommend a walk around the picturesque village. I recommend staying for a special occasion and would not hesitate to return. I would like to thank The Marquis for making our stay an unforgettable experience.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the top of the stairs right at the back, Peace and quiet away from the main road.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Come on in. Take a look around. You might just be surprised. For while the Alkham Valley, indeed Alkham village itself, suggests genteel old England at its most rural and unspoiled, the Marquis itself is something else... It's a strikingly contemporary restaurant and hotel. The product of a major renovation in 2008, what was once the village's pub, The Marquis of Granby, has been utterly transformed. Space, light, fine furnishings and beautiful fabrics and the opportunity to fine tune every detail hasn't been missed. The restaurant is a revelation. Head Chef Andrew King's seasonally inspired and locally sourced menus are as fresh as they are imaginative, and the elegant 21st century styling is exceptional. Queen sized pocket sprung beds are swathed in the finest cotton. Sumptuous fabrics dress windows and chairs. And an eclectic collection of art completes the mood, the mix and the personality that makes this place unique. Boutique chic in the heart of the English countryside? You've found it. You've arrived. ... more   less
